I have always wanted to become a good writer. I read a lot of novels, I keep a journal, I join discussion boards, I write on our school paper, etc. but still I don't think I'm already a good writer. :-(

I agree with what Shebang says. I want to become a good writer to but in another aspect. Lets work towards what we aspire and be patient. And remember to read, read, read.

I have that problem myself. The best advice I could give you would be to have confidence in yourself. Find out what you're really interested in, which will usually establish your opinions about that subject. And...i guess, just practice it by making commentary on a fashion magazine or discussing the magazine with your friends!

I have been writing for many years now and attending writing classes at Cardiff University, and I still tend to think that I am not a good writer. I have heard that even best-selling authors are not fully confident in their writing skills, therefore I think each of us tend to think this way. I stopped worrying about how good a writer I was and just write. If we just keep writing, our writing skills will improve. I don't go to the Uni. any more, but I still attend a writing group where we read out our work and discuss it. - Derek

Just do what I did, and get some writing friends and arrange a regular time and place to meet that is convenient to all of you. It makes a give difference when you can talk about your writing with other people. - Derek

It's good to set high expectations on oneself but to be perfectionist is a different story. If you want to know if you are a good writer, you can ask someone from the faculty in your school to read your articles and ask their opinion. If not maybe you can ask friends or classmates if your not comfortable with a teacher. That way, you can gauge your development and progress. Because if you alone will evaluate yourself you might be biased. Just like now, you say that your are not a good writer. All journalist says one thing inorder to become effecient at writing--- read, read, and read. So do not be impatient. You are doing good and great. You read, you keep a journal (this is one of the most importanat), you join discussions boards, and most of all, you write in your school paper. What else! You have it all. To become a good writer you have to work hard. It does not happen overnight. Even professional writers take writing classes to supplement them.

Well, at first you shouldn't be thining so negatively about yourself! If you keep that on, then you will never be able to be a good writer. Being a good writer is all about endurance, quality and patience. Don't just write anything down that comes up in your mind. Remember it, put it on a piece of paper with only some words, and when you are feeling that you're having your moment of talent (Don't know how to say that in english exactly ) Then take those words together, and turn it into some sense ingood order and write some pages. Maybe you could show us some of your writings as an example for us, so we can critizise about your writing. Which ofcourse isn't meant as a bad thing, but only to give out some pointers IF needed. Who knows! Maybe you'll be the next J.K. Rowling or maybe the next Tim Russert!

I think a part of it is natural talent and flair, but a lot of it is practice. If you just keep plugging away at it and write and read as much as possible, eventually your writing will evolve. Or at least, that's what I believe. Try keeping some of your old pieces of writing and going back over them after some time to try and make them better. You can also join free writing sites online where people will give you feedback on your writing. Remember, practice makes perfect!!
