It never occur to me that envy and jealousy can be interchanged by some folks. Here in our country, envy is inggit and jealousy is selos, two different words with a big difference in meaning. Jealousy is the fear of loosing someone or something dear to someone else, it could be a person that you have a relationship with or a friend or a family member, it could also be an animal like a family pet. For example, a mother who gets jealous of her only son's girlfriend, because she thinks that the girlfriend is taking her son away from her by demanding so much of his attention and the fear that ultimately, the girlfriend will have the son with her and she (the mother) will be left alone - that is jealousy. Another example, is a wife with a husband who have girl buddies and friends, the wife tend to read some malice between their actions because of jealousy, because the wife fear that sooner or later the husband will pick his friend (who is a girl) over her because the friend knows the husband longer or deeper or that the friend understands him better or that they have this mutual understanding, etcetera, etcetera. That is jealousy. Envy on the other hand is what you feel when you want something that others have or something that you wish others won't have until you have it first or until, let's say, forever. For example, when your neighbor instantly became rich and they build their grand mansion with a parking garage that houses lots of luxury cars and they travel and shop without a care for the money that they are wasting, while you are still living the same life, working like a dog, spending on budget, taking the bus, as in you're living an opposite life and all you can do is stare and wish and hope that you have all that or think that you are more deserving of their money and of their life because you are a better person - that is envy. Another example, if you're friend is better looking than you, taller, sexier, smarter, with luscious tresses, attention and boy-magnet, a beauty queen without a crown while you are plain and regular and you wish that you are taller or that you have her hair or that you can wear the same clothes as she does and it's eating you in a negative way, that is envy. Another example, if you have an office mate who's stay in the company is as long as yours but she's suddenly a candidate for promotion and you wish that she doesn't get it for no good reason - that is envy. You see, jealousy is an emotion that involves something or someone that one have and his/her fear of loosing it while envy is an emotion towards something or someone that he/she doesn't have and wants to attain or just wanna hinder someone else from having it.

got an idea on the tag you said about "7 deadly sins". I guess envy is far worst than jealousy if I have to refer to the bible. Envy i think is like a terminal case of cancer (say stage 5) while jealousy is at its early stage and can be curable. i felt jealous over simple things but never get envious over other people.
