Why does the Moon seems bigger?

"Look dad, the moon is very near co'z its too big on the horizon", said my 5 year old son when we look at the sky on a full moon. At first I just play with him and told him that if we are on an airplane this moment, we could land on the moon because its too close to Earth. I think he's very contended with my answer but lately I come to think that I have done the explaining quite wrong. And I wanted to explain it one more time to him with the correct explanation this time. How will I do this? Can anyone explain to me how come the moon seems bigger sometimes?

I live in Northwest Indiana and I have not noticed the moon looking any bigger, I will have to keep my eye on that. It may be the time of the year, harvest time, then it is bigger over here

I read somewhere that the Earth and the moon are actually closer together than ever before. I wish I could remember where I read that so I could share the link with you, but unfortunately, it has been a while ago that I read it.
