Having noticed the trend in some responses that many younger people resent their tax dollars being used to support Medicare's elderly and disabled so the following article will bring joy to your black hearts.
Waves of new fund cuts imperil US nursing homes
HARTFORD, Conn. – The nation's nursing homes are perilously close to laying off workers, cutting services — possibly even closing — because of a perfect storm wallop from the recession and deep federal and state government spending cuts, industry experts say.
A Medicare rate adjustment that cuts an estimated $16 billion in nursing home funding over the next 10 years was enacted at week's end by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services — on top of state-level cuts or flat-funding that already had the industry reeling.
And Congress is debating slashing billions more in Medicare funding as part of health care reform.
Add it all up, and the nursing home industry is headed for a crisis, industry officials say.

However now instead of nursing homes guess where these folks will now live???? WITH YOU! That is something you can look forward to.....and it will not be easy being a 24/7 caregiver!
Your opinion on this jump start to robbing Medicare?

But everyone said Obama wasn't going to be mean to the old people! They said that there would be no RATIONING of healthcare!
No surprise to me. And if I am out of a job...can I come live with YOU?

I'd rather live with you, at least I know you and I could agree on things. I'd probably be fed bread and water if I went to live with the ones who agree Obama is right in the way he's dealing with this mess.

Don't worry, I believe in working for what I get....I'd cook and clean and watch the babies for my room and board....

I have a feeling that we are going to see so much more of this. It is scary. I have a son at home that I care for now, and cannot imagine taking care of my parents on top of it, although I will before I put them in a home. A rest home would definitely be a last resort, although there may be very few of them.

It is really going to cause some families big problems. If the cold hearted ones try to avoid care for their needy family members there if still a law against Elder Abuse!

This I really dont understand why the cuts hree as the pateints have to turn over their SSI checks and SS check to the homes. Thats any where from A %1000 to $2000 a month from these people. So how can they be broke even if they are to get billions of $ from medicare I dont see why this should happen As the people have to use thier checks to stay in these places and if they need extra things like getting them up dressed fed any little thing the family has to pay that out of pocket.
My mom pays $2200 to stay where she is and I still havent seen all that much care given to her to pay that much to sleep! and my brother has to pay extra for pullups,Ensure , and for someone to dress her if they dont get there in time to do it.
and he said it seemed to him they tried to do this early getting her ready for bed as he gets there shortly after work and they could already have her ready for bed! So they can charge him $7 for doing it.

There are staffing shortages in nursing homes to be sure. First off....CNA's are expected to take care of around 20-30 people each, often times VERY dependent people, and I can tell you from experience that that is very difficult to do, especially when you make minimum wage. Why are there problems in staffing? Some of it is greed on the part of the homes...unwilling to give up some of the profits to hire enough staff. BUT the state governments allow them to do this...by setting the requirments for staff to patient ratio so low. Then there is the actual per day cost of running the place..housekeepers salaries, dietary workers salaries, nursing salaries, administration and record keeping salaries, maintenence workers salaries and supplies and overhead like electric bills and mortgage on the building. All this for around $300 to $400 dollars a day per resident. Yep, they're being greedy all right....NOT. Talk to the government who will only pay so much per day for the complete care of very sick and dependent people.

debracarey,
The place my mom is in am very sure they dont owe a mortgage.
The other things yup but they are still greedy! AS I dont see all that much that they do for my mom.
this is a very small place I would say maybe 30 people in there.
2 to 3 poeple that are surpose to check on the oldsters and they dont find that my mom had fallen for several hours or if she didnt come to eat they used to not even find out why.
and she dont eat she moves her food around then maybe a bite or 2 Now I have seen what she has had for breakfast sometimes not very appealing.
$300 to $400 a day is way to much and ya know it.
My neice is a caregiver when she can get work has been all her life she started by living in the house of the people she took care of.
This is just unreqal that they are cutting all this money its telling me they dont care about the old poeple and they want them just to DIE!

Lakota...I am not by any means saying that your mother's care could not be better. Sounds to me like she is living in a privately owned facility or home. I am speaking of large corporate owned homes. If you feel that her care is substandard, call the authorities. There should be, by law, a posting of an ombudsman in the home. If you can't find it, call your local Division of Aging hotline, found in most phone books.

I've been trying to find out if these cuts are due to the recent vote against raising Medicare premiums approximate $10/month for seniors with annual incomes over $85,000 for individuals and $170,000 for couples. Since my daughter worked in nursing homes for many years and my mother was in one for awhile in 2003 and again last year I know there are many problems. It's a little hard to understand the nursing homes losing money since I know their residents with homes basically have to sign them away. I also know they certainly work short-staffed most of the time. No matter how you slice it, I'd hope nobody would put their parents in a nursing home unless it were the absolute last resort! I had no choice with my mom but it was still one of the hardest things I've ever had to do.
I've certainly noticed the trend all over the country these days that many people of all ages seem to resent their tax dollars going to help anyone in need and I find that very scary. I don't even want to think about what it will be like when I get old!

annie I am already old (70 1/2 years) and have had paid my Medicare Taxes for more years than some of these young folks who complain about their tax dollars supporting me have been alive. I have paid my dues and deserve to get out what I paid into. You are correct about how much it cost to get into a decent nursing home I have already checked into it and they take every dime you have. I do think that people making large salaries should pay more. I was making a very good salary when I retired therefore my taxes were pretty hefty.

So where would these younger people be if the older ones hadn't paid for their schooling(sometimes including subsidizing college) and often their healthcare when they were young. A large part of my taxes(local, state and federal) goes toward education of these younger people.

IMO the first thing that should be done is to eliminate the fraud in Medicare! Having been a Medicare Fraud Investigator for many years the amount of fraud is staggering!!
. That goes hand in hand with the mismanagement of all the government programs, Social Security, Welfare, Medicaid, etc., etc. This is not being done because our government officials are lining their own pockets so we have no-one to turn to who can oversee how these funds are being handled to benefit the honest decent people.

If the social security funds hadn't been tapped for other things we wouldn't be looking at the possibility of nothing being there when it is our turn.

Most nursing homes are always perilously close to closure. They run at a very tiny profit margin. Medicare patients are generally no less costly to care for, often more costly, and the government payments are no more than you would imagine. It's a very sad thing to see the lack of caring from the younger generation and I can't imagine where it's all going to end up, since I read a scientist's prediction that the next generation can expect most people to live to 100!

You forgot my favorite option. Maybe you didn't know about it. Too few people do. Nowadays, many elderly and disabled people have home care. They hire their own people to come into their houses and help them with whatever they need. This is much cheaper than a nursing home. For myself, I am disabled and I save the state $22,000 a year or more just by living in my own house instead of a nursing home. I think if more people knew about this we'd be advocating for home care instead of nursing homes or having to go live with their children and feeling like a burden.

That is one option I will not forget. I can home from the rehab nursing home where I had been learning to walk again after breaking my back. The very next day I had a lady visit me with all kinds of options for help. Then the social worker from the N.H. came to visit and give me even more options. So I will do everything I can to live in my home.

Sure why not? The elderly paid their time working, us still working are still paying into these things w/o vote to do so.
I did live the 247 home care and it sux big! If my mom wasn't on assistance before she went into a nuring home we would of had to find somewhere for her to move or us or?? We have no room here.
Also them skimping on staffing, that's NORMAL in a nursing home! Shoot they make people make 10-15 minutes after hitting the buzzer so they can toilet and then wonder why they soil their clothes...DUH!

If they are going to rob anyone, they should be robbing the medicAID and welfare programs, ya know the ones that are catering to the able bodied people....the ones who could work. Not a group that can no longer help themselves get out of bed in the morning! Come to think of it, they have been robbing social security medicare for a long time know, to keep a bunch of able bodied people happy! Probably because it keeps that unemployment number down lower than it would be if they were all out there looking for work instead of happily collecting their gov't checks.
