In the above two discusses, I have introduced the generation situation of Qingdao. Next I will tell you specific spots. The Jutting Pier There is a place where tourists will never miss to pay a visit whenever they come to Qingdao. Yes, it is the Jutting Pier, also called Zhanqiao in Chinese. The Jutting Pier is a simbolic structure of Qingdao. Located in the west end of Shinan distrct, the Jutting Pier is actually an extension of the Zhongshan Road, which is a shopping street. The Jutting Pier was fist founded in 1892, when Zhang Gaoyuan, the commander of Dengzhou of Qing Dynasty, was appoited to station troops in Qingdao. He ordered to build a 200 meters long, 10 meters wide simple bridge to facilitate the transportation of military supplies and anchor the warships of Beiyang fleet. In 1897, the German army landed the city from Qingdao gulf and occupied the city. The Jutting Pier was the witness of German invasion. In 1900, the pier was distroyed by a typhoon and was rebuilt as long as 350 meters long with a light rail on it. When the Dagang Port was completed in 1905, the pier ended its historical mission and opened to the pubulic. From 1931-1933, the pier rebuilt of reinforce concrete, extended to 400 meters long, and became 8 meters wide. A semi-round embankment was built at the southen end. On the embankment, a two-story pavilion was built in traditional Chinses style, named "Huilan Pavilion". From the octagnal pavilion, you can enjogy the upcoming billows in layers. This beautiful scene is called Ripple Diverging Pavilion as the top of the ten scenoc sights of Qingdao in 1930'. Now at the peak season, more than 20,000 visitors arrive at the Jutting Pier daily.
