Do you prefer communicate per email or per phone at work?

In the last few years I have noticed that I receive many more emails at work than phone calls. It is a good thing because communication is quicker and you have a written record. But on the other side aren't we missing a little out by no longer talking? What do you think? How do you like to communicate at work? What percentage of your daily communication is per email?

I feel emails and chats are better in the preliminary discussions or routine discussions as we need not wait for the other person to be free when we call. It works out economical as well when its cross country talks. Well I used to feel comfortable opening a chat window and convey the message to my colleagues who used to sit in the same floor than walking to their desk / picking up the phone. In corporate world emails and chats are better.

I agree that emails can be very useful. But I find it funny when people chat to someone sitting 5 desks away. It's different if you send an email with a request that might have to be done later on as it acts as a reminder. But I still like good old conversations.

we are missing a little, and I think it is easier for people to misunderstand the meaning of an email if the context isn't clear. I have been told before that I was viewed to be mean, unapproachable, and 'snotty' because the email answers I provided were to the point. These folks thought I was brushing them off? But really, I answered the question in a professional manner. So I joined myLot to work on fluffing content :) But there is a definable trend in moving to email communications. I work in a call center and our own call volume has dropped while server traffic has increased.

I don't think there is anything wrong with emails being short and to the point. But I must admit it annoys me when people don't even take the time to write "Hi" and end with their full name!
