Another lovely service courtesy of your airline

It was last month that we flew our nephew up here from Los Angeles so that he could be at the twins' birthday party. After the tickets were purchased, which I managed to get at the $49 rate one way and the $59 rate the other way (which does NOT add up to $108, can you say taxes?), I checked out the unaccompanied minor procedures to see if they had changed. Well goody, the nice airliner had added a $25 charge, each way, payable at check-in. I wasn't ecstatic but I wanted him up here, so I told my sister-in-law and we each agreed to pay it on our end. So this weekend on the 10th, I am flying down to Los Angeles. My Aunt Terri is moving back to New York and I wanted to say goodbye. I don't know when or if I will be able to travel back there or vice versa given current economic conditions, among other things. Anyway I was happy to get the $49 rate both ways as well as a good deal on a rental car. No hidden charges since I am NOT a minor, unaccompanied or otherwise, I am not taking any luggage and it's much too short a flight for there to be food offered. Today I got an e-mail reminding me of my upcoming flight, which I have never gotten before, and I thought, "oh, that's nice." Then I opened it and saw their lovely new feature. Yes indeed, folks, for only $10 each way, I can check in NOW and be guaranteed the best seats, first crack at the luggage bin, etc. Whoo hoo. I don't think so. I know it's tough times and the airlines aren't having it all that easy, but NO, not happening. Thanks Southwest, but I'll just leave a reminder on my calendar to check in first thing Friday morning and again Friday evening and take my chances with the seating. So now this is me up on my soapbox talking to anybody who flies this airline or any other one that is doing this. "Don't pay their stupid fee. Don't anybody pay their fee. The old system was just fine. If NOBODY pays their stupid fee, they will have to look at it as a failed experiment and drop it." End rant...

I don't blame u i wouldn't pay it either. I hate it when people have all the add-ons when u are trying to do whatever. I don't fly so this will be one thing i don't have to contend with. Have a safe trip.

I prefer to drive anytime, because I love driving and can drive for 12 hours straight - but sometimes time and distance dictate flying.

I'd rather fly than drive 8 hours each way! Thanks!

My cousin told me that another airline charges $75 each way for unaccompanied minors, sheesh!

Don't laugh, I hear some airlines want to charge for that!

Unaccompanied minor and wheelchair services are no extra cost here. We are able to on-line check in 24 hours before the flight at no cost, and we can choose our own seats. While cheaper flights are available with 7kg carry-on luggage only, 23kg checked luggage is available for an extra $8 - which still makes a much cheaper flight. OK Dawn I promise not to pay fees to Southwest. In fact I promise not to fly with them. Easy for me, thousands of kms and an ocean away, but I hope others who do use the airline will refuse to play their game.

Just don't get me started Dawn. Budget airlines are the biggest rip off merchants in the business. But now even the big airlines are getting in on the act. BA just announced paying to change seats etc.

Paying to change seats, lovely. They probably charge double if you're in a wheelchair!

We live in Western Australia and we often travel to the other side of the country to visit family in Victoria. We almost always go for the basic Airlines with the cheapest fares as we don’t worry too much about meals etc because it is only a three hour flight. We discovered the hard way that to check luggage in it costs an extra $20 that totals $60 for the three of us. It does suck especially because when booking online with this particular airline there is no option for only one of us to check in our luggage it is either all or no one so there is no option but pay the entire $60!

Paula, I'm pretty sure I know which airline that would be: one I would never use again after my experience with them. Have you checked out other airlines? I have found that Virgin is usually the best buy and gives the best service. Their optional check-in luggage is $8 per 23kg bag.

Now that's outrageous, you ought to be able to pack one bag and only pay the $20 once...

Thanks cloudwatcher I'll keep that in mind! $8 sounds a lot more reasonable!

Airlines! I hate them. If you don't pay extra for something willingly they will find a way to tack on the fees. It is ridiculous. They wonder why their seats remain half empty. People are not flying anymore unless they have to. Next thing you know they will charge you for every item that you have in your carry on. You pay all that money and they lose your luggage, treat you like a criminal, and in most cases if you do get your luggage---it's damaged. Then they wonder why everybody crams all their stuff into a carry on.

I agree.....and I went out to New York to visit my daughter and her family there were a couple of other things that were going on.....like they are going to start limiting how much you can carry on.....and if you have more they will check it and you get to pay for that. A guy behind me getting onto the plane also said they wanted $90.00 because his bag was over 40 lbs.....he stepped aside and emptied out his shaving cream etc....then went back to check in his bag and they didn't even weight it.....just put it through. He was quite upset. Gotta watch them all the time or they will suck the life right out of you!

Hi Dawn, the last time I flew was on a half empty flight and the seats in front were the ones by the emergecy exit but with lots of leg room. We weren't allowed to move into them without paying a £25 excess on board the flight, so the nice seats just sat there empty. Ridiculous or what.

Really dumb. I can see holding them until the flight was closed, but after that?
