What crafting hobbies do you dabble in?

I am a stay at home mother and I just recently quit smoking, and with winter coming I am looking for something to keep myself busy while the kids are at school and I am here by myself. I have dabbled in crocheting but only know the one basic stitch, I have a sewing machine but haven't really done much with it only because I am not sure as to any ideas with it yet. I wish I was more crafty but just never have seemed to find anything that sticks with me. I have a whole separate room that I can dedicate to crafts but I just don't have anything in mind to do. I was wondering what type of crafts you may dabble into or would like to if you had the chance?

I paint ceramicm houses and ornaments. I also make holiday gift baskets. I am hoping to try to learn how to make jewelry and wreath making. I am unemployed right now and need something to do in order to keep busy. I hate watching soap operas all the time, I need to keep my mind sharp.

Ceramics do sound like a nice craft to be into. There are so many different things that you can make out of ceramics , I have an uncle that makes teapot sets and Indian artifacts and then sells them at flea markets in Florida where he lives. I also have always wanted to make my own wreath, there is a website i came across the other day that had a fall leaf wreath made with felt and I saved it hoping maybe sometime I will attempt to make it but I am sure I never will LOL Thanks for your response randylovesdar

If you can, please send me the web site where you got the leaf wreath. It sounds like a lot of fun. I am always willing to try something new. Also, do you make any kind of jewelry or know of any web sites where you can find ways to make jewelry.

Cd Holder - Felt lined cd holder that I use to store my important cd's. Keeps them from scratching.
I can knit but only a basic afghan. Have knitted one for our kids and a couple for our grandkids. Haven't ventured beyond the simple afghan yet. My favorite craft is making anything with plastic canvas. This is a craft kids can also do and seem to like it. It's a craft that can be started, put down and return to it later without any problem. Kids might not be able to sit long enough to complete a project at one sitting so it's easy enough to pack it up and finish it at another time. I've made all kinds of Sesame Street kleenex covers, Elmo banks and wall hangings for our grandkids. It's been fun. Some also sold at craft fairs before I realized I probably shouldn't be selling them without some kind of consent. Have also made several crafts for myself that I use everyday such as a standing toothbrush holder and dixie cup holder to match the bathroom. Ya know, sometimes those fat toothbrushes won't fit into an older home's wall mounted holder. Will try to upload a photo for you so you can get the general idea of what craft I love to work with when I have spare time. Also make some Christmas items. I would like to eventually learn to crochet.

You are very welcome. I can only do basic knitting. Can't make anything fancy such as sweaters or socks. Have made several afghans.

I crochet and have made a few blankets for my kids but I have never attempted knitting, I can only do the basic stitch with crocheting so I am not sure how good I would be with knitting. I have seen a bunch of the plastic canvas art that you are talking about. When my son was young it did one myself of Eeyore because that was what he was into when he was younger. I agree that this is something that the kids would surely be able to do and also really enjoy. Thanks for your response carolbee

I do beading, it is fantastic. I now sell the stuff I make, so its a great way to bring a little extra money into the household too. Our children are all under 4, so I only do it at night time, so a very part time hobby. Our eldest loves doing it also & makes gifts for family for birthdays/christmas etc which the person receives loves that it has not only been made, but by their grandson/nephew, etc. Of course I give him direction so it is something wearable, but its something that can involve all the family really & the opportunity to make something of it :)

Hello mummy2jake, I would like to be able to make a few dollars off a crafting hooby as well but even if I wasn't able to get to that point it would still be nice like you said to get the whole family involved and to also be able to share that items with family for gifts. I know my daughter would definitely enjoy doing this the most plus it gives you some quality time together. Thanks for your response.

Hi, froggieslover. I don't have any crafts that I perform as my hobbie. I just do Bible Correspondence Courses on the side. I am not a crafty person. It is great that you have skills in this area.

I wish I was a lot more crafty than I am now, there are only a few things that i can do and I want to do more. I think that bible courses is just as good as a hobby. Thanks for your response crean97

I like woodcrafts the best. I mostly make Christmas ornaments, and refrigerator magnets at other times of the year. I love decorative painting also, so most of my ornaments are painted wood ones. I like making dollhouse miniatures also, and carving birds out of wood, but I haven't done either in a while because I'm short on time.

I have too much time that is my problem and the fact that i do not know how to use of it properly, there are all these things that I am interested in but never get around to attempting them. I think if you can do some wood work it is always nice. I have neighbor that has a wood shop in his garage and he has built some beautiful pieces of furniture and shelving for his wife,it would be nice if we could do something of the same. thanks for your response connierebel.

I do jewelry out of wire and bead also. the one in the picture is one I did. an atc card is your hand work of any designs you can do yourself . they are about 2.5 x 3.5 in or 64 x 89 mm. tiny art created by you or others to swap, trade or whatever. like almost a playing card but your own work. atc stands for artist trading card. they are fun to make and for all ages. some coud be worh alot of money you make from scrap yourself that dos not cost you.. have fun hope I hae helped some.

I just want to say, you can become crafty. You just have to find something and keep working it. You tube has some very good videos on crochet, you might be able to learn a few more stitches. Anyway, I love most crafts. Crochet is my favorite. I crochet everyday. In the past 30 days, I have completed a baby blanket, pair wrist warmers, several hair accessories, and a hat. I wish I had a room dedicated to crafting.

my advice is for you to visit your local library and take a look at the craft books and see what other interests you as crafts go. there are a lot of great crafts out there but it depends on money as well as time you have to devote to it.

It is great that you are able to do so many different crafts, I always thought stamping would be a great craft. I have stamps in my craft box that I use with the kids and I just got a calligraphy book but haven't gotten any further than that...I guess that is half of the problem.

I'm what you would call a jack of all trades and a master of none when it comes to crafting. I dabble in a bit of everything. I sew, mess around with beads and paper crafts. Do a bit of candle and soap making. I just can't stick to one particular craft. I love doing it all. If yarn is your true love and you aren't very good at crocheting with needles, then I would recommend you give knifty knitters a try. My mom tried to teach me to knit and crochet about a million times and I just couldnt get the hang of it, but it's something I always wanted to do. I found these knifty knitters in Michaels (the craft store) and thought what the heck, I'll give them a try. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE them. They have round looms and long looms. There are lots of websites that have free patterns or you can you tube the term knifty knitter and there are lots of videos on how to's for them. Good luck and happy crafting!!

oh, you're so lucky to have a room dedicated to crafts! I knit, crochet (I didn't cotton to this activity right away either, but the more I did it, the more interested I became), do paper crafts. I'm dabbling in polymer clay crafts right now. It's fascinating and quite fun, but I'm thinking of making some money out of it, which takes away from the fun a bit. :)

Hi. If you're interested in doing something part time to make money, there's a website called odesk and it's very legit and completely free. It's got a lot of information on it, but you should check it out. It will give you something to do part time and make money at the same time. It's a bidding or hourly process, so it's no nickel and dime here or there. You can actually make money and earn a check every week. It is also very well monitored and has an application you download to keep track of your hours and then you submit them at the end of the week. Give it a shot. If nothing else, I've also been getting into writing. Just brainstorm, write what's on your mind etc. It doesn't even have to make sense, but it keeps me from smoking as much. Hope this helps.

For so long my favorite crafting hobby was needlework. I especially enjoyed to embroider. Nitting and crocheting were all right, but needlework was more fun. I also liked making plastic canvas projects. Now I am into beading. I like to make bracelets and Christmas ornaments the most.

I did a eeyore plastic canvas when my son was young because that was what he was into but that was the only time I touched it. Beading seems to be something that a lot of people are getting into, I just have plastic beads that my daughter has made her play braclets and necklaces with...i would like to be able to get into some jewelry making too as I think it would be fun...thanks for your response sender

Other crafts i enjoy are scrapbooking.

Lady Elizabeth - This lady bear was designed and made by me. It was a donation for a college event and the winner was way beyond thrilled when she won the bear.
I dabble in almost every craft imaginable. My favorite and the one I make money at is designing and making teddy bears. I have been a bear artist for the past 25 years and have enjoyed every minute of what I have been doing. It was a long hard haul getting my name known and making a profit at what I was doing, but it also was extremely fun work too. Also I have made many bears as gifts and each recipient has been thrilled with their gift. One thing you might do is go to your county fair and see what kind of things are on exhibit there. It might spark some ideas. Also set aside a few hours and cruise through your local craft supply store.

Your teddy bear is so cute....it is great that you are able to find something that you can now make a profit from. You know now a days there are also the build a bear type bears and that may be something that you can get into as well. The bears that you make look great but these build a bears won't take quite as much to make and not as much time and I know that so many kids are big into those right now....Keep up the great looking bears and thanks for your response lovebear

Cross stitching seems to be the craft of choice LOL bottle bead work sounds like it might be fun to do, I have an uncle that has a shop and he sells old antiques and some of the bottles that he has a really cool shaped and colored so adding beads to them would probably really make them beautiful. Thanks for your response jerimiyah

I make my own birthday and christmas cards to send to friends and relatives I also dabble with making earrings for my grandchildren, I have also done cross stitch cards in the past. You could also use the sewing machine to make cushion covers, curtains or even throws. Give it a try its all rewarding when you see your finished article.

I dabbled in card making a few times but could never get them to look quite as good as I saw on television or online. I think they are a nice thing to get into because the possibilities are endless on what you can do and sometimes it gets hard to find a card for just what you are looking for. I think with this sewing machine the possibilities are also endless i just need to get myself motivated a bit more and attempt more things. thanks for your response buckiem

when i was younger, i used to make dresses for my own dolls. we didn't have a sewing machine but i did it manually. i love sewing and i have been trying to cut and sew my own short pants and house dresses before. maybe, u can start out by making small items which ur kids love. u can make tassels out of thread and hang these in ur windows (i saw this on tv yesterday) or tie them into cut, colored cardboard and make them bookmarkers. because christmas season is just around, maybe u can start with things to liven up ur house. i always look around the house and check what beautiful-shaped pebbles, twigs or anything i can find and i spray them with gold paint. they make good decoration pieces for christmas especially if i just decorate them with small red, green, or silver ribbons. i also make use of the eggs shells (just carefully bore a hole to get the yolk and white out) and i draw a face on it; put a bit of cotton to represent a beard and then make out a read cap on top (cover the hole with the cap)... it is santa claus! i used to hang them on the christmas tree. i am sure there are a lot more ... sometimes i get ideas from doing my window shopping or from watching tv.

...Hi froggieslover, I love to write, so paper and pen or my computer are my friends, I also like to paint and draw when I am inspired. If you have a sewing machine, and a lot of scraps of cloth material laying around, or old skirts and blouses, that are basically worn out, why not start sewing together pieces to make a quilt. I have always found quilts to be fascinating pieces of art work. You don't need a design, you just cut up triangles and rectangles and sew then together until you have a large square, for a twin or double bed, or a throw quilt. The backing can be any soft, bunting type cloth that you get from a material store. Congratulations on quitting smoking, that's a big accomplishment. Take care.

Writing is always a nice talent to have, my husband write a bunch of music/poetry and I often think I wish I could sit down like him and write just off the top of my head. I do want to learn to quilt and I surely have enough fabrics to do it I just need to find the motivation to do it and I know with the internet now I can easily pull up a video on how to. Thanks for your response artistry.

I do cross stitch and i love it. started out a few years ago with a simple pattern to get me going and i'm now on really complicated stuff. Because you concentrate on the pattern, you don't have to think aboiut anything else and so the stresses of my day just ease away. it makes good presents too, I do things for kids bedrooms, pictures for my mum and mum in law, and also pretty names for school bags etc!

I have read and heard a lot of people saying that they enjoy cross stitching, i myself have tried it a few times but have never had it stick with me. I have a few different patterns things that i bought when I started trying to get into it but haven't touched them since. I am thinking that maybe when my daughter gets older maybe it is something that she will get into and like. Thanks for your response littlemrssunshine
