We're omnivorous. Dogs are carnivorous. Our stomachs are far more versatile than theirs though less efficient. Chocolate can wreck havoc on their system often making them sick enough to kill them. They're bodies aren't designed or able to process it so it ends up being toxic. It's kind of like putting diesel fuel into a regular car.

Well, yeah, it's said to be poisonous to dogs. Mine, however, never got that memo and eats chocolate all the time! Not the smartest of animals mind you...she's been eating chocolate since she was about 1-2...she's now 7 years old...alive and spunky as every other min pin...I'm convinced she's immortal!

You have an extremely lucky dog then, chaotic. Long-term exposure to toxic foods can severely damage a dog, if not kill it. Does she work as a good luck charm? If so, I suggest you buy a lotto ticket, lol. Best wishes for you & your furry friend! :)

When I had a dog I feed my dog some chocolate I had and was told by others that it was not good to feed dogs chocolate. So, after that I did not feed the dog anymore chocolate even though he wanted some.

Good answer, happy. Always keep in mind too, that sometimes, pets are like kids. Just because your child wants something, doesn't mean you give it to them. Same goes for pets. Best wishes for you & your furry friend! :)

Hi Tinsky, Very interesting topic from you. I really have no idea that chocolates can bring harm to pets until I saw your topic here. I am doing some searching online and found that Chocolates are dangerous for pets. Chocolate contains of theobromine and it can cause vomitting and restlessness in pets. While a very small amount of chocolate may not harm some dogs, but it is best to avoid giving it to them at all. In any case if your dog do take small amount of chocolate,do consult with a veterinarian for consultation.

it really depends on what type of chocolate, and the size of the dog and amount of chocolate.

Chocolate is incredibly harmful to dogs. I knew a dog that was constantly being fed chocolate. Her teeth were rotting away and eventually all had to be taken out. Now she can barely eat. This is not the worst case scenerio so please don't feed your dog chocolate, even though they are good at manipulating us by looking really cute and begging.

i dont think chocolate is good for dogs or any pet. i heard that most human food is not good for pets. but i occasionally give my cat meat treats when i get some because i am a vegetarian and i dont eat meat. my cat loves meat.

I saw on a pet show once that it's not so much the chocolate that is harmful to dogs as the alkali that is used to process most brands of milk chocolates and some dark chocolates (Hershey's Special Dark is one, I'm pretty sure). They are not able to digest the alkali properly so it makes them sick. But I don't know that I would accept this as the gospel truth and feed my dog chocolates that were not processed with alkali. Just to be safe.

What? Chocolates? Is it really true? I have never heard of anything like that before. I fed my dog chocolates but it is still alive and very much healthy. Where did you come to know something like this. This must have been a joke played at you by someone. As far as I know nothing will happen if you feed your dog chocolates.

They both inhibit an enzyme called phosphodiesterase, which results in increased activity in the skeletal and heart muscles, and cause central nervous system stimulation, resulting in tachycardia (increased heart rate), cardiac arrhythmias and eventually seizures. Seizures can contribute to further problems by causing hyperthermia (increased temperature) which leads to further damage. A lethal dose of theobromine is about 100-200mg/kg for dogs and about 80-150mg/kg for cats. The darker the chocolate is, the more theobromine it contains- milk chocolate is not 'safe', but an awful lot would have to be eaten to cause problems. However, about 150-200g of dark chocolate would theoretically be enough to kill a cat or small dog. Hope this helps!

our dog, kb - the young kb
yes. it is bad for the dogs depending on toxicity. if the level is too high, it will kill the dog. my son gave a small piece to our dog not knowing about its effect. we told him that the dog will die and he was so sad about giving a piece to the dog. the dog is still with us now because we were already very careful not to feed him chocolates from that time on.

I have heard the same thing, but once a friend of mine gave his dog an oreo cookie. I reacted like dude your gonna kill your dog. He responded to me that he sometimes gives his dog chocolate and that nothing has happened to cc. Well i couldnt argue too much, i mean its a dog who has live 8-10 years.

Chocolate is not good for your pets, defeniatly don't feed it to them! Chocolate isn't very good for people if they eat too much--so it shouldn't be that shocking that it isn't good for pets! Our bodies are different then animals and things will effect us differently. Chocolate will effect your pets and they won't live as long and won't be as healthy... No chocolate! lol

Yes, chocolate is very toxic to cats and dogs, and other animals as well. It contains a chemical compound called "Theobromine." The darker the chocolate, such as Baker's Chocolate or baking chocolate contains more cocoa which in turn contains more of the Theobromine, which makes it even more deadlier. Dogs, cats, and other animals cannot digest this chemical as humans can, and it stays in the bloodstream, damaging the central nervous system and the circulatory system. It IS deadly for them.

I am not quite sure but I have always been told that chocolates are very dangerous to dogs. I am not sure if it is all chocolates and how little or large it takes to harm then but I have just never cared to take a chance so I have never given my dog any sorts of chocolate small or large......simple answer to your question is we are human not animals...are insides are different =)

Chocolate is TOXIC to dogs! Just because you can eat something doesn't mean your pet should...there are many other foods than can be lethal to dogs as well including onions. Do a search online, read up on the facts and protect your dog! I work for a local vet clinic...believe me, dogs CAN DIE from eating chocolate! P.S. This is a great site to use as a resource: www.dog-first-aid-101.com/toxic-foods.html If you scroll down just a bit, the 2nd one of that page is chocolate and it gives you all the detailed explanation as to why it is a no-no for dogs. Best wishes for you and your furry friend! :)
