Why Are Your Friends Your Friends?

Is it because you have something in common, or you like their sense of humor? Maybe it's because you are not alike at all? I have a friend who is so much like me that it is scary, sometimes. All the things that we have in common are what brought us together. But, she is also very different from me. She really is kind of an innocent in some ways. And, I love that about her. Her trust in the human race, and her approach to life are completely different than mine. Yet, she gets it when I say something like "The earth seems to be off center today." As I sat reading earlier, I suddenly realized that the people I keep as friends, the ones I speak to and, share things with most, are the ones that are very different from me. It may be that what we have in common brought us together but, it is the diversities that will keep those friendships in tact for a long, long time. How boring my life would be if all my friends were just like me! Why do you think you choose the people you choose to be your friends?

I think that the primary reasoning behind who I choose to be friends with is all about how they make me feel about myself. It sounds selfish in some ways to put it like this, but think about it! Your very description above talks about what you like about this person, yet you're ultimately feeling better about yourself for knowing them! As for me, it's not only this, there's also a connection beyond what I'd experience with "day to day" people. Just like you've already mentioned, it can be that they "get" me without me having to explain myself all the time; or they're accepting of my quirks and they also challenge me in some way! That aspect too is important I think. It comes down to traits that I admire too. All in all, it's a win/win; and yes, diversity is a wonderful thing and it would certainly be boring if I spent my life associating with people that were exactly like myself. Commonalities obviously exist too otherwise there'd be little affinity between us overall, but differences abound also and sure keep things fun and interesting. Oh..... And sometimes I end up becoming really close friends with someone 'cos they can burp heaps better than I can!

James, It is about how they make us feel. I couldn't agree more. I really don't think it is selfish because by them making you feel good about yourself, you in return make them feel good. This particular group of people have been enjoying each others company and playing off each other long before I came along. But the fact that you all took me in, really makes me feel good. I love to be a part of a group of people who really care about each other in so many ways. We all have so many layers to ourselves and as we peel them away, We find ourselves feeling even more accepted. It's truly a great feeling to know and enjoy people like we have here. I'm ashamed to say how well I burp!! Leenie

It's the only thing I can do better than you. I will admit that.

Bo You are so right. You described your friend (and mine) to a T. I believe when we meet someone like her, there is this chemistry that takes hold and makes us want to know more about that person. It makes us want to be around or in touch with that person as much as possible. I believe we have like souls. We become connected to that person without any effort on our part. It is a natural connection. We spend our lifetime in search of our Soul Sisters and Brothers. That's what makes Mylot so special. It is the conductor to our connections with each other. I hope I was not wrong in assuming who you were talking about. I have made many connections here that have become a part of my lifeline. You my dear friend are one of those very special people in my life. Hugsss Leenie

*S* Thanks, Leenie. You probably were not wrong about the person. EVERY body knows she's either an innocent, in some respects, or she is just totally oblivious.*LOL*
