Please help! What should I do if my kitchen sink is backed up with brown water?

Hi all! My son and I were gone for a few hours getting the last stuff out of our old apartment into our new apartment. When we got back home to our new apartment we found the kitchen sink all backed up with very dirty, brownish colored water. It doesn't seem to smell that bad. I called the emergency maintenance number about 1 hour ago but they haven't gotten back to me. I could only leave a message. In all my history of renting I've never come across this kind of problem. What should I do? Thanks.
