Hello friends. In many areas, one can see things painted on buildings, streets, bridges, wall, fences...it seems to be quite prevelant, at least here in the US. We call it grafitti, and some have been arrested for spray painting randomly on things words, pictures, cars, and phrases that are lurid.
Other times, some of it is actually like art and very beautiful. It is not unusual these days, even in my own small town, for business owners to hire artists or groups to deliberately paint murals and such on the walls of their buildings. I like the ones that are here, very professional; very artistic. And even in the large inner cities, some of the amateur spray-painted works are quite lovely.
Other folks deliberately have special designs or pictures painted on their vehicles, motor homes, etc.
I do not support such things when they are gross, illegal, or constitute vandalism, though. But I do love the ones that are legal and very well done. They are beautiful.
What about you? Do people do this in your area? Is it art or is it crime according to your laws? Do you think even professionally done murals add to or detract from the good looks of a city or a buidling? What is your own viewpoint?

Hi Karen! How are you?
This is a beautiful post. I would love to respond. There are several facts to this. We have a heritage of this kind of art and many of the rural houses have beautiful designs and murals painted. It is a kind of art form that's on the verge of extinction. Nowadays people are mostly upto vandalism and destroying others property without any permission from them. The political parties mostly take undue advantage of being powerful (mostly as in being bullies) and endorse their advert o the personal walls. This is gross. In our country, even though in some places its illegal but the law is too dormant and ignorant and mere puppet.

I think if the owner of the building hires someone to paint a mural then it is legal and considered art. I have seen some graffiti which is in taste and it is obvious that the person has some talent. Still, if it was done without the owners permission then it is a crime. Art is a matter of personal taste and it is just wrong for someone to take it upon themselves to use someone elses property as their drawing board. Actually I have to say that where I live a good majority of the graffiti is just vulgar and ugly. It is a real problem here. I can look out my window and see new graffiti pretty regular on the business's across the way. It a very well lit shopping plaza and it just amazes me that they can get away with it. The cops patrol the area fairly regular but I think they must have certain times when they drive thru and maybe these kids have figured that out.

Hi Sid. I agree that anyone wishing to "paint" on a building should indeed have the owner's permission. If not, and someone is caught, it's considered against the law here, too. I hate seeing the kind of things you've described on the building across the street from where you live. The vulgarity or gang messages are just not right.
Thank you for sharing your input. I hope some of the people defacing that building do get caught.
Karen
