Are you off today or do you have to work? What will you be doing on this quasi holiday? I would be going to the bank, but it is closed. I would call the bank, but it is closed. I don't really have any plans except to pick up my dog and to go to Arby's. I may make scalloped apples for dinner, as it is cool here.

Hi snowy... honestly, not sure why we have this holiday...my state (Washington) does not observe Columbus day, so I am working today...yay. But I mean, why would we celebrate this day? Technically, Columbus didn't do or find anything. Sure, he might have brought an awareness of the "New World" to the present day Europeans of that time, but he sure wasn't the first European to find it. Vikings from Scandinavia found it hundreds of years before Columbus set foot here, so I'm still wondering why some people have tried to make a holiday out of it. I am not opposed to having another holiday...heck, I love time off just as much as the next guy... Anyway, enjoy your time off today! Dive Deep!

I just think that we will always be celebrating Columbus in some fashion although truly I don't think he made much of a contribution here, and in fact was a negative as so many of the native Indian peoples were affected by smallpox.

Yeah, but it took recent archaeology to prove the Vikings found the New World. Columbus set the stage for European colonization. The Vikings didn't do that so they shouldn't be honored in the way Columbus is. Had Columbus not persuaded royalty then we would not be here today. The Vikings discovery was thought to be myths up until the discovery of Viking artifacts. The United States would not have been founded without Columbus though. Obviously not everyone wants to honor a man that set the stage for European colonization. But I make a point to acknowledge what he did for us. He's one of our nations heroes and should be treated as such.

Those of the traditional Native American leaning view Columbus day much the same way the rest of America view September 11th.

I'm going to be sealing up some more windows and I'm making noodles for chicken and noodles for supper. I figure the heat from boiling the chicken will provide heat and keep the furnace from running. Other than that I plan on sitting here at the 'puter and wasting most of the day...

Nothing big planned here. The mail doesn't run today for the holiday, so I guess I'll just be waiting and wishing for some things to arrive.

I worked, I always work, they don't give us holidays . I have to work Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Years and any other holiday if it lands on a work day. AND the roommate had to go to a couple of doctor's appointments, AND I took one of the feral kittens to get spayed.

Before I read your post I had no idea of Columbus day. Thanks for letting me know it. Today my husband did not go to work so it was an enjoyable day to him, but not to me. I talked my tax claim with the tax government and had no progress. They made a mistake about my work status and it takes time to adjust. But I’m desperate to the money. It’s for my 2008-2009 financial year. Now it’s already September but I still don’t get my tax money back. If they don’t change my record on their system it will affect my work in next two months too. When I think it I feel headache and really upset.

I am lucky enough to have the day off today, and the best part is, I am still getting paid even though I'm doing absolutely nothing. I don't really have much plans- just mylotting a lot, talking with my boyfriend, possibly going downtown to sightsee, writing, and watching a movie or two. Just a nice, relaxing day to prepare myself for the hard week ahead.
