Any experience with foster care?

My parents have been foster parents for a whole lot of years now. I've had a foster sister (12, went home), a foster brother (11, special care now) and now I have a foster brother again (4 months). We have dealt with a very aggresive kid (my elder foster brother) who lied, cheated, stole things and set things on fire. It was really very scary. My foster sister was a damaged but lovely child, she was very rude and offensive when she first came with us, but totally turned around. My baby foster brother is a very lovely and intelligent child, he's with us because his mom and dad are mentally handicapped and can't take care of him. They love him to pieces, but can't take care of him. They visit him though :) Anyone else have stories to share about foster care? I try to keep them short and give no names due to privacy reasons.

I don't have any stories, but I would love to hear more of yours. Once I'm done with college and on my feet, I want to do some sort of therapeutic foster care.

There are a lot of great books on experiences of people around aswell, but unfortunatly I know only books that are written in Dutch and I haven't a clue if they were ever translated. Therapeutic foster care sounds like a very heavy thing. I admire people who do that, but personally I would have trouble because of the fine line between your personal life and work. Therapeutic foster parents basicly work at home taking care of children that are very troubled; in their own families. On the other hand, you have more expertise than most parents. I am very busy at the time being moving into my first appartment, but I wouldn'tmmind sharing stories after I've settled .

i work in the educational field and see foster kids all the time my heart breaks for them. sometimes they are used as extra income or as cleaning staff. i don't know what's worse, kids in crappy homes with their parents or in foster care with idiots. kudo's to your parents and their big hearts!

You are absolutely right, this happens a lot of times. I wonder why foster care doesn't keep a closer eye out for this brutality. I've been a student in the educational field and I'm solliciting for a function at an afterschool daycare (don't know if that's the right english word, I hope you understand what I mean). I'm glad my parents are nothing like that, my mom couldn't have any children after I was born (theoratically I couldn't have been born either) because her utherus (?) was very ill and removed when I was just a little girl. She allways wanted more children, so they decided they could best help children out who need temporary or longer term homes. Thank you for your kind and descriptive response! :)
