why the topic SECURITY is at everywhere now a days?

Specially after 9/11, this term security has landed in every phases of our life. Physical security, electronic security, surveillance system, network security, cyber security--- at every places you find the term security. With the plea of strengthening security we allowed huge business of metal detectors, arch way, cctv system, access controlling, anti telephone bugging etc etc and etc. Are we human beings, really that bad? or these are just the propaganda of security device manufacturers? What a business concept !! why dont they offer us freelance online surveillance duty? Or it is already there. Anyone has any idea about this?
