Do you really need a guest room?

A friend of mine just bought a new house. She insisted that it needs to have a spare bedroom to use as a guest room, even though that really stretched her budget. My point was that whe only has people staying over maybe once or twice a year.
Is it really worth paying for a guest room for that? Or could you expect the guests to sleep on an inflatable bed in the living room?

If you have a couch then you already have a guest room. But if you have the room and the furniture then there's no harm in having a real guest room. I have my old furniture from when I was little that lives in what I guess you would call our guest room. And if we were to buy a new bed then the old one would probably go inhabit another empty bedroom. If we didn't already have the extra furniture then we wouldn't worry about it though.
