Does prison stop people from commiting crime? I dont think so!

I think not! I have had first hand experience from a silly mistake (drink related) and got a short stretch of a few months, now i was scared to death when we rolled up to the prison gates in the van from the courts but after a few days there i had settled right in and it was actually quite a nice break from the harsh reality that is everyday life! I'll explain, everything is done for you washing, cooking, your even told when to wake up! You have sky television i had a playstation 2 really nice stereo, i could go to the gym 5 times a week and didnt have to pay anything and it was a better gym than the one i was paying £35 a week for on the outside! Dont get me wrong the freedom factor was horrible but lets face it if your living a life of crime you aint really free in the first place. Please give me your views as i am very interested in this subject and would like to know what people think.

Prisons in India, atleast, are not the cool ones with internet, music or good food. Its miserable with poor living conditions. So people in India would'nt want to spend their time within the walls of a prison.. Cheers, Karen

I think if prisons here in the UK were more like in some of the other countries we hear about people would think twice about commiting crime. Thanks for your response.

You're right. Prison these days is a walk in the park. My grandson, who is 19, is now serving his second term in prison for burglary and theft. He could be released a month early if he went to stay with his mother, but he won't because she doesn't like him coming in drunk every night, and she'd expect him to contribute to his keep, which I think is perfectly reasonable. When someone believes they have more freedom in prison than at home, there's something seriously wrong with the justice system. Great topic - welcome to Mylot.

It is shocking really as when i went to prison i was so scared as id watched the old films like scum etc. But when id got there dont get me wrong it was daunting at first but after getting settled in i can see why people get instatutionalised (if thats how you spell it) because its so easy as it is all done for you, you dont even have to think for yourself! Thanks for your reply.

i think prisons are more like a holiday camp these days,if prisons were like how they used to be then there wouldn't be as many offenders

It is a holiday camp! we used to call our local "costa del dorch" because it so layed back! i dont think alot of thought goes into the prison system now.

I don't think prison deters people from crime at all! The overcrowded prison systems are evidence of that. The prisoners are given free accomodation, food and entertainment. This costs the tax payer a lot of money, these prisoners should be made to work, or contribute to the community in some way. I have heard of offenders even being sent on holidays! Prison should be a punishment, but it seems to be an easy ride for criminals.

I totally agree i think their aim is to get criminals off the street for a while not to rehabilitate and i think this is wrong as if more money went into rehabilitation rather than just locking people up less money would be spent in the long run maybe!
