What is the diffference between Pentium-D and Pentium-4?

I don't have much knowledge about computers. I just heard about Pentium-D and Pentium-4. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between the two and which one is the better?

The major difference between Pentium D and Pentium 4 is that the first one is dual core and the next one is single core processor. Though price wise they are same but Pentium D is made for desktop PCs, whereas Pentium 4 is made for both desktop and laptops.
