Festivals for the departed

Why does nearly every religion in the world have a festival for the departed, something like All Souls Day or Halloween or Bhoot Chaturdashi? Is it out of fear or for paying respect to the departed?

Well in our religion we believe in rebirth, so the festival is to remember those who have departed and for sending peace and happiness in their next birth, or if they are not reborn then peace is prayed for their soul, it is more of respect and love than fear.
