Fantasy books that deal with children or young adults issues ?

Hello everybody ! I'm starting to write my thesis for University and my first idea was to write something about how books (for kids and young adults) can help kids to face issues such as a loss, bullism, poverty, being different (outsiders, which can also be found in Tim Burton's movies since it's one of his main themes) and so on. For instance, I took Harry Potter as an example for various reasons: - it can be appreciated both by children and young adults (or adults, like me) - it deals with being different - it deals with being an orphan - it deals with losing someone close to you What I'm asking you is: do you know other books (ESPECIALLY fantasy books) that deal with the previously mentioned topics/problems or some other problems which kids will have to face (or might have to face) while growing up ? I would REALLY appreciate both titles of books I can read for what concerns this topic or ALSO suggestions and help on what I could write more or how to go on with my thesis which is -for now- only one of the many ideas I've had. Thanks A LOT :)

Oh I have "Goldem compass" by Pullman but haven't read it yet because I tend to buy too many books and it takes me some time to read them because of University :)

well don't you think these are two entirely different topics being dealt in the same heading for discussion??

yeah but I could deal with both of them I guess. Our professor talks about both Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Rings which isn't exactly for children :)

I would suggest Terry Pratchett's books for younger readers, particularly the Truckers trilogy, and The Wee Free Men/Tiffany Aching set. I wasn't impressed with the Johnny Maxwell series, but perhaps you might look at them too. Lash
