Are you a thumbsucker when you were young?

What is the real cause of children thumb sucking? I noticed that to a lot of kids. I have a one year old child now and she is not doing that. When is the time that the child start to show that habit of thumb sucking? how can we avoid it? What are the effects of that habit to the child?
