Stores disappearing in our local malls

I went for a walk through our College Square Mall in Cedar Falls the other day and was astounded to discover just how many businesses are gone. I counted 17 stores that are no longer in the mall and all the store fronts are still sitting empty. Zales and Kay jewelery stores were both gone along with Icings and Afterthoughts which were accessory stores, Just for Kids ( a consignment store)and several clothing stores, the arcade, Short's Travel Service and even Spencers was gone. I live in Waterloo and the job market is not that great here and now we have 17 mall stores that are gone. Where is the recovery of jobs that the staffing houses said would be back in October? I know that unemployment is high in the area and the extension for unemployment came through but it was only for 13 weeks and many will find that they will be lucky if they qualify and might not get the entire 13 weeks of the extension depending on what they have left in their accounts. It is going to get tougher for many couples who have no children at home and have no resources for help. Have you noticed stores closing in your areas? About the only stores doing well seem to be consignment shops and pawn shops.

This recession is hurting everyone! I've traveled the USA a lot in the last year, I've seen the same situation all over! I guess the only bright side will be when we pull out of this there will be a lot of rebuilding going on! tdemex

yeah, it's pretty bad when the stores who are doing good are pawn shops and consignment stores. Every store gone is just more people unemployed and if your looking for a job in todays economy you may be standing in line with people who are way over qualified but hunger for any job they can find.

I've been unemployed since last November! I install assembly lines for the Auto Industry, and I turn 62 this Saturday! No one will hire a 62 year old, so I'm pretty screwed! Just hope it turns around soon, I can get back in the Industry I was in at this point because of my experience there! But can't change careers at this point! T---

I have to agree, we live in a small town, and it is getting to be more of a ghost town all the time. Jobs are leaving left and right and they say the economy is getting better, and gas is on the rise again. I don't know what people are going to do.

In our place, it's not that much, I mean some are gone but new ones keeps on coming, I don't understand why some are closing but lots of shops are still coming out, new malls keeps on rising but there's supposed to be a problem in the economy, It's a good thing specially lots of job will become available but really, it's confusing.
