Hello people. I have 3 dogs and one of them is just a puppy. I bath my puppy trice a week. How about you? Is it okay to bath dogs everyday? Do you shampoo them too? Please share your knowledge.

My husband, who's raised dogs all his life, whose grandmother bred purebred collies, said: Dogs are predators. In the wild, their scent needs to blend with the surroundings. A dog won't roll around in dog poop; but he'll roll around in cow patties -- all to mask his scent. If you let your dogs outside, this may be what they're doing. On the question on shampooing your dogs, you are bathing them way too much. Dog hair follicles excrete sebum, just like ours does, and it has various substances to protect the dog's skin from becoming sunburnt. Unless your dogs are lapdogs, and you can dress them up in protective sunwear, don't bathe them any more often than 6 weeks. If you have problems with odor, you can always purchase a nice boar's hair bristle brush and use one of the dry or wet spray-on in-between bath products. And personally, I'd start feeding him garlic. Lots of it. Can't hurt. Good luck with your puppies :D.

Thank you so much for that wonderful information. I really didn't know that. I thought my dog would hate garlic since the smell is not that pleasant. Well I'll try it for sure and if my dog reacts unfavorably from it then I'll tell you. Thanks again.

I have a degree in Veterinary Technology, and I can tell you that it is okay to bathe your dogs, but not too much. If you bathe them too much, it dries up all their natural oils. Then they have dry skin and all kinds of other problems. If they stink, bathe them, but you really only need to do it a couple of times a month. It is okay to shampoo them, but you must make sure you're using a shampoo for dogs, not people. People shampoo is too harsh for your animals.

Hi pinkberryzz! First of all, I'm not a Veterinarian, I'm more like an animal nurse. Yes, every 4 days is fine, but you should get that puppy housebroken and potty trained so he doesn't keep soiling himself. Thank you for the welcome!

Animal nurse. Never heard of that. Sounds nice. :) Anyway my pet is now well trained. She doesn't get herself soiled easily. I'm so happy with her progress. And I'm just bathing her every 4-5 days. Thanks again.

Hi there Dkprincess. It's great to have you here. A veterinarian. Awesome. I have a question. What if they stink every other 4 days? Does that mean I can bathe them every other 4 days? My puppy is so messy right now. She always soils herself with her urine. Ewww.

Hello pinkberryzz welcome to mylot! By your current ratings I can see that you are fairly new to this site. So I would like to extend my hand in a offer of freindship. I have a chihuahua puppy, even though he is a year old and it starting to get sort of messy I do not bathe him everyday. On average he probably gets 3 to 5 baths throughout the month. I mean dogs do lick there selves so they honestly don't need to be bathe so frequently. Well with that said pinkberryzz I hope everything is going great in your life. And until next time NakitaLikely3617 is out! Take care and be safe!

I have two puppies. I bath them once a week. I do not know which is right whether to bath them once or twice in a week or in a month. But usually when they smell already, I bath them. When its also summer and the sun is quite hot, then I bath them often.

It's unhealthy to bathe your dogs daily, as they can lose their natural oils. Even Vets will tell you this. Twice a week is probably ok, but not more frequently than that. Sometimes I use pet shampoo, other times I use gentle human soap, the type that's good enough for a baby's skin. My furbabies do get bum baths more often as they're both maltese x shih tzus, and poo will get stuck to their bottom on occasion, so they get a quick bum bath in the sink so they're bottoms are always clean, and they don't seem to mind that. Occasionally too, I lightly mist water over them on hot days, as we currently have a lot of hot days here.

I haven't visited the vet yet so I don't know much about this yet. That's a very good idea you just gave me. I'll just wash them in the sink in the particular area which is dirty. Thank you so much.

Yes you're absolutely right. Washing a particular area could really save time and like you said it saves them from so much stress. I don't want my beloved pet get stressed by bathing her everyday. Again thanks to you.

You're most welcome, glad I could help. I do that because it's less stress for them, and is much quicker than a full on bath. Also when I give them a full bath, it has to be in the bathtub which often puts my back out, so it's just easier on me also when I just wash the part that needs washing.

I think I end up shampooing my dog about once a month. Shes an indoor dog but she also needs to be groomed regularly to keep her hair from matting. So I usually give her a hair cut about every two months and a bath every month. Or if she finds something really juicey to roll around in then she gets one earlier!

Hehe. I wish my baby dog won't get to roll any juicey objects out there. I'm shampooing my furry friend twice a month and it's coming out good. Her hair is so smooth and silky. I'm also so proud of my little friend. She's so neat. Thanks for sharing skris35. Hope to see you around again.

I don't give my dog a bath every single day but I give him a bath about once a month or more often if he needs it. they says its not good to give your dog a bath every day because just like humans you can strip their skin of the natural oils. i think its different for certain breeds. some you can wash more often and others you are only suppose to do when needed so about every couple of weeks. if hes an inside door..i use oatmeal shampoo for my dog. he's got sensitive skin and he'll get flakey if i do it too often or don't use good shampoo.

Oh doesn't your dog smells if you only bath him once a month? I like to cuddle my puppy that's why I always want her to be clean and smelling good. Wow oatmeal for shampoo? That's awesome. Your dog must be very happy during bathing.

It is not good to bathe a dog that often. Usually every two weeks is the earliest recommended. It is not good for their skin to be bathed so often. especially with shampoo. It is ok to get them wet or for them to swim if it is hot out. But bathing with shampoo dries their skin too much.

It is probably ok to bathe them once per week, but every day is not good. If you bathe dogs too often supposedly they can get sick.
• Philippines

Yes you're right. I think I know better now. Bathing dogs everyday is never been a good idea since this can get them sick and will also affect their skins' protective oil. The sebum. So I think it's best to bathe dogs once every two weeks or once a week will do if it's really necessary.

Hi pinkberryzz. It is recommended that you shouldn't bathe your dog/puppy too often as it strips them of the natural serum and oils that protect the fur and skin from disease and the cold. When my dog was a puppy we used a shampoo especially for puppies that had evening primrose in it. He is 5 now and he gets a 'proper' shampoo bath about 3 times a year, he gets hosed down a lot more often than that though as he likes to roll in the really smelly things he finds in the park :)

Hello there fellow pet lover. I suggest you don't bath you puppy everyday. It is advised that you only bath your puppy one a week or if the weather is hot you can do it twice a week. I also bath my dog twice a week because the weather is so hot here. I shampoo her too but only once a week. shadow41

Thank you for you suggestion shadow41. I wonder what shampoo are you using. Is it a anti-itch shampoo? My puppy is always scratching but when I checked her I can see no flees in her. Do you think my puppy is allergic to something like food or maybe allergic to environment? What do you think?

I see. So you're saying that you can't bath your dog everyday because you don't have the things necessary for it? Is that what you mean? In here I can bath my dog everyday but I think it's not good for her health.

I'm sorry but I don't get what you mean. Are you asking me if my environment is dirty or bad? or if it is full of dust in the air? I really don't understand. Sorry again.

In summer I bath my dog everyday as it very hot here. And in winter thrice a week. Yes I shampoo the dog too but not everyday. It also depends on what kind of shampoo you are using. Some shampoo has chemicals which can harm the hair of the dog. So if you are using such shampoo be cautious. I use Ayurvedic shampoo which is not harmful at all.

You shouldn't bathe your dogs more than once a month . It can cause skin problems. Check with any vet..

Yeah thanks for the info. I recently checked the vet and she said it's okay for me to bath my pet once a week since it's hot here in our country. Thanks for sharing again.

Hi,pinkberryzz. Obviously, you don't need to bath them everyday,it's harmful to dog's fur and body, because i know there is something secrete by dog's body to prevent themselves from catching skin disease.
