Hi velocity,
I have met such a situation before. Perhaps you can try a free lightweight tool--FavBackup.
FavBackup is a simple solution for you to backup and restore web browser settings and other data on Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 systems. No installation required. Don’t forget to check our help section.
With it, you can import bookmarks from IE to mozilla and some bookmarks from mozilla to IE easily.

It is really very simple and you can learn to use it once you have installed it.

I use FireFox and during the first two updates I made to it I lost my bookmarks. I wasn't a happy guy to say the least.
I now use a FireFox Addon called. XMarks to keep a copy of my bookmarks online. I no longer have to get stressed when I do any updates.
If they have an addon like that available for IE it would just a point of uploading those bookmarks and then syncing with your Mozilla.
Hope the addon is available for both.

You could try Xmarks I have used it very often not just it will do backup to your bookmarks but as well synchronized it. It is very easy easy to use also once it's installed you don't notice that it already syncing your bookmarks automatically. It's is cross platform meaning it is compatible with known browsers.Even if you are using another PC you can pull your bookmarks from the net because you have the option store it there server. So anywhere in the world as long you have internet connection you can access your bookmarks.
