Question about a Class Rec...

Okay...so I'm looking up classes that would help me become a Children's Social Worker...and one of these classes is Psychology. This is what it says for "notes" on these classes... "This course has no official prerequisites. However, since the course involves a substantial amount of reading, it is strongly recommended that you have college level English reading and verbal comprehension skills." Now....I read a lot, but I read mostly Fiction...really the only nonfiction I've read (other than Highschool stuff) is Marley and Me. lol. I think I have good reading skills, but...I don't know! I'm just wondering if that means I have "college level English reading and verbal skills." Has anyone ever taken a Phsychology class, and maybe can tell me a little about it and maybe what this reccomendation from the class really means? Thanks!!

I would guess that you probably have the reading skills you need, but understand that the books you will be reading won't be as interesting as a novel - or even Marley and Me. I took Psych 101 in college, 30 YEARS ago, and didn't really have a problem. But I also took a class in high school and after running into the teacher years later mentioned I had done it again, she said I probably could've placed out of it - and she was probably right. As it was, I took it at 8 a.m. and was pretty foggy most of the time because I was on the pain meds from the car accident the year before... It was a reasonable way to wake up in my opinion...

I defeniatly know Psychology books won't be as entertaining as my fictions--that's why I don't normally like reading nonfictions! lol. Wow, you had a lot going on when you were in the class! I'm hopin I won't be in any kind of accident if I take the class hehe. And they have later times, I was kind of looking at the 10-10:50 or 11-11:50 classes. Thanks Elic!

Are you saying Psychology has a lot of number and language things in it, or you're saying you liked that class because it didn't involve that? I really don't like math so there might be an issue of Psychology involves a lot of it lol

I did take a college psychology class but only one year. During that period of time, all I learned were the parts of the brain. The first year is pretty much a basic introduction regarding the brain. You have good communication skills and can express yourself well in a myLot discussion so you shouldn't have any problem with psychology 101. I didn't have college English reading and verbal comprehension skills when I took the class and I did well. Unfortunately I couldn't finish my degree in the field since my parents were aging and I just had too much on my plate at home. My goal was to become a social worker or psychologist but it didn't happen. We do have a close family member who is a social worker. It's a very rewarding career but at the same time demanding. I wish you much success, carolbee

You shouldn't have any problem in class if you are shy. Reading, learning and testing well are the keys to success. Good luck and much success.

Thank you carol! :) Great response! :) I'm sorry it didn't work out for you :( But it's good to know your family member enjoys the career! I have good communication on here, but I can be kind of shy when I talk to people :P lol. But I'm never rude or anything--if someone talks to me I talk back, I'm just not good at initiating conversations. Hopely that won't be an issue for the class.

Okay, a little late. ARe you still taking the psychology class? I got my bachelor's in general psychology after studying a lot of the social sciences and humanities. If ever any questions, hit me directly... All you need to familiarize yourself with is APA writing style, it's a bit different than MLA--the most standard collegiate writing style. Any other questions, hit me up. An intro. to psych class will be a piect of cake for you. DR...

I think you should try and take the course. It definitely sounds like a very good area in which you wish to study. I really think that it will be super interesting and the book is perhaps too, but not like reading a novel. Interesting, but in a different way. Good luck with it, yeah. And I think college English means like you need to sit for an entry test in English perhaps. To show that you are eligible. Don't worry so much, I'm sure you can do it, certainly..

I think it could be interesting too :D Learning about what makes people do things...and maybe reading come interesting case files(I was told this could be part of the class). I'll just have to see if I can work this all out so I can take the classes I need.

Some psychology books can be rather technical. The best thing to do is find out some of the titles that are required on the course, find them in the library or bookstore and have a little read. If you find you are able to absorb the information okay then you'll be okay in the class.

Oo, good idea! And by browsing psychology books I could also see if I'd still be interested in the class! :) Thank you hvedra!!

That is a good idea. Different instructors might have different books. Depends. Our state college allowed the different instructors to select different books. But our community college required all the instructors to have to same book per class.

Hi Lilyofthe thorns, I suggest you go to universities offering social work course. You can enroll directly to the course. There are good universitgies out there that offers Bachelor of Science in Social Work.

well the school I was looking at offers a social working class, psychology and sociology. I think those would cover a lot! :)

It's been a long time, but I think you'll be fine. I think they just want to be sure that non-English speakers can keep up with the work. Psychology should be a lot of fun. An introductory course is mostly theory.

Ooo okay, that's a good point. I'm sure a lot of people with English as a second language would be interested in psychology! Thanks mcat! :)

I think you'll be fine taking the class. It's kind of odd that they would say that in the notes about "college level" reading and comprehension since it's not an advanced class and has no prerequisites. Obviously, it could be taken by a first year college student which means they would have graduated high school and have that level of reading and comprehension. As a matter of fact, I took a Psychology class in my first year of college back, ahem... well, I won't mention how many years ago... Anyway, I found the class to be extremely interesting and the textbook definitely held my attention. While it won't be like reading a novel, if you are even the slightest bit interested in human behavior and the human mind, you will enjoy the class. I say you should plunge right in and take the class. [;-)

lol thank you miller :P It's not required of you to say when you were in college to respond to my discussion! :D lol It's good to know that you liked the class! I'm not really sure WHAT I want to do right now, and I'm trying to figure it out. Just recently I started thinking about becoming a social worker for children. I really want to help kids and I think that would be the best way!

Your English is good. Psychology classes often involve analysis of some vague things. Or abstract analysis of some common things, like a rock. You can observe a rock and generate thoughts like "it is hard" or "it is dirty." On a deeper level, you can say that it is "old and looks like it has been here since the ancient times, it has been through a lot and yet it's still hard and strong." Something like that.

Oo, well I like to write too, so I don't think I would have any kind of problems with writing descriptions like that! :) Thanks Crimson!
