How is the Canadian (Calgary) housing market different from the US?

United States

I've lived in the US for my entire life. I'm 28 and have been working for the same company since I graduated, but I just found out I'm getting transferred to Calgary next year. My company is helping with relocation costs but they're not providing me a place to live while I'm up there. I really don't feel like renting, and I'm assuming that the Canadian housing market is in a similar situation to the US market (eg. everything has dropped in price and there are great deals). I'm trying to learn more about how the Canadian mortgage game may be different from that in the US. So far I've talked to some brokers ( http://www.purcellmortgageteam.com/ ), but I'd like to hear from someone who has been through the experience of moving from the US to buy a place in Canada. Thanks.

well, here in canada, we didnt get hit as hard as you folks did with the recession, so you might not get quite the bargain you were hoping for and from what i understand, calgary is not a cheap place to live. i think you are doing the right thing already.
