How old were you when you first started wearing glasses?

I remember when I was around 8 or 9 years old the nurse at school told me that I needed glasses. I was so upset that I would never wear them in school. Back then kids got picked on for wearing glasses. Now it's more accepted by kids. How old were you when you first started wearing glasses?

I was forty and it was a horrible shock for me. I was so upset but now like my glasses as they hide the bags under my eyes

I agree with you cynthiann, I used to be sooo vain about wearing my glasses then like you noticed that they hide my bags so now I'm not vain and wear them all the time. I'm 46, have been wearing glasses on and off for reading, close work since my late teens and was gutted a few months back when I had to wear them so much more often, so vain I would take them off if I was going to answer the door etc

I never thought about glasses hiding bags before. Maybe I need to wear mine more often.

I was in play school, that's what we used to call preschool. My eyes were so bad that the world was a blur and nobody knew. I thought it was normal, being a child with no frame of reference. I don't remember ever not wearing glasses! I had lasik a few years ago and now only wear glasses when I'm driving, although I can see well enough if I were to lose them.

I'm VERY happy with lasik! My eyes were so bad that a total correction wasn't possible, but I can see well enough to drive if I have to and if I couldn't wear my glasses I could function quite well. I remember being so surprised after the procedure that I could see peoples' faces instead of featureless blurs!

Seems a lot more people are getting lasik done. Are you happy with the results?

I only discovered that I am short sighted when I was in high school. The frequent bout of headaches was the warning that I did not heed not until I went to see a specialist and he confirmed that the cause of my headaches was my eyesight and I needed to wear glasses.

It's funny I think a lot of adults don't even think to get their eyes checked because of headaches.

Im not exactly sure when i started wearing glasses. I think around 10-12 yrs. I also didnt wear them at school because of being picked on. I used to put them on before leaving the house then take them off before reaching the school. Visa versa for on the way home. One day after going home for lunch i accidently returned to school with the glasses on. Right away a boy saw me and started calling me four eyes. I just wore them after that because the whole school knew shortly after that. How word travels fast.

I started using them last year at the age of 25. But I use them only while working on the PC. I am an IT person and so, spend way too much time glued to my computer. So I wear my specs, just so my power does not increase. I have minimum eye power and can do without glasses.

You're lucky that you didn't need to wear glasses as a child.

Yeah. But you know what? My elder sister started wearing glasses at the age of 6. And at about the same age, my eyes would hurt when I strained them. So I used to keep visiting the doc, being all paranoid that I had eye-power..LOL

I was the same age, about 9, when I was told I would need glasses. This was in the 1970's, so I too was called a four eyes. What was worse, was that I was a 'fat four eyes' with thick glasses. Needless to say, kid-hood was absolutely no fun at all that was gladly left behind! Yech!

hi Shar I was about the age you were when I found out that I needed glasses. This was in the early thirties, and the glasses'for kids were all round lens like owl eyes.I got teased dreadfully, and would take them off, and put them in my pocket.I hated to be called four eyes and owl eyes. but finally as I got into my teens they began to make other shaped lens and prettier frames so that the glasses did not look ugly. I then realized that with them I had no problem seeing anything, while without I would bump into things, trip over things. I began to learn to like my glasses then.so I have been wearing glasses now for many years. The ones I have now have blue frames which bring out my blue green eyes and my silver hair. so am told they look really good on me. thats a compliment worth hearing. he he.

I was about 10 years old when I started wearing glasses. The same thing happened to me. We used to have annual eye check ups at our school (as well as hearing check ups) and the nurse told me I needed glasses. It didn't come as a big shocker to me, especially since I was the only one who couldn't see the board i class. I wasn't upset. I just lived with it.

I was pretty early to wear glasses. I had to strain my eyes off from their sockets to read the letters written on the blackboard. maybe I was 10 or 11 that time. Like you i had to deal with that embarrassment. Now my friends wouldn't imagine it would be me sans the glasses.

I remember straining to see the blackboard too. I would even wait until after class and sneak upfront to copy everything off the blackboard. Sometimes I would ask my friends if I could copy their notes since I couldn't see them.

I first started wearing glasses at the age of 13. Now 47 years later I am still wearing. Back then it was myopic. But now I use progressive glasses. Some call it multi-focal glasses.

pair of eyeglasses - reading glasses
I was already 45 years old when I first wore my eyeglasses. They are reading eyeglasses only. My vision when not reading is so good. Frequent exposure to the computer monitor may have contributed to the deteriorating eye vision. We should need to take care of our eyes as they are so important.

I was 10 years old when I first got a pair of eye glasses. Over the next so many years my eye sight got worse and I noticed that at every eye test. I had my eye glasses for reading but then I got even more short sighted. By age 18 I needed my eye glasses on all day. When I avoided wearing them my couldn't see very clearly. At age 21 years old when I was traveling in Australia I got some contact lenses. It was wonderful to be able to see so very much better than ever before. These days I have contact lenses in the day and eye glasses when I get up in the night time.

I think I had my glasses when I was 23 years old. It's because of my stigmatism that I need to wear one.

I was probably about 6 or 7 when I started wearing glasses, as far as I know I was born with them I've been wearing them so long..lol. I don't think it took too much to get me to keep wearing them even in school, I can't really remember. I have three nephews that are supposed to be wearing glasses but they won't do it, one said they make him look like a dork, you know how kids are. Hopefully they will start wearing them regularly maybe they'll notice their eyesight is better with them.

agh I was 7, 2nd grade, and the little nose pieces bothered me, so I my glasses were big squarish brown plastic granny frames.

I was about eight years old like you when I had first started wearing glasses. When the school nurse told me that I needed glasses, i was crushed. I did not want to wear them. Kids can be so cruel to other kids, especially when it comes to wearing glasses. I was called every name you can use about wearing glasses. I just wanted to hide some times. if I saw a cute boy and didn't want him to know I wore glasses, I would take them off. The price of vanity! I still wear glasses to this day and found the world was not so bad. Having to wear glasses is not the end of the world.

I attribute my myopia to my habit.I often read when I walked on my way to home after school. Unbelievable? it's true! Although I walked so slowly, I think it did harm to my eye, then I was fourteen. I got poor eyesight in my senior high school and I have to wear glasses, I am so reluctant to do that!
