How long can you hold your breath?

Philippines

Everytime we go to a swimming pool me and my friends challenged each other on who can hold their breath longer. I really don't know how long I could hold it because we don't timed it. Maybe more or less a minute. Do you know David Blaine? We once tried it, and I can't remember how long, maybe a couple of hours, that was unbelievable! By the way, don't overdue it because holding your breath for a long time increases your intracranial pressure that may lead to damaged brain.

I think he's not only a magician, some of his acts are like extraordinary stunts. You could search him on the net, I know some acts he made like standing on a high pole (I don't know how long), remaining inside a block of ice (he got hospitalized there), and a lot more. You should check it out. He undergoes training and strict preparations.

i don't know if i will admire and claps my hands or should i pity him for putting himself into such trouble only to be popular. is it really worth it to go such extreme to earn money and fame. anyways, it could had been such a very hard preparation. he puts his life on risk each time he does that kind of thing.

Yup, I would rather enjoy myself doing other things that I enjoy instead of training very hard and risking my life to be known. But still he got what he wants and he's famous now.

OMG? That's cool! Just playing a game would increased your capacity to hold your breath. We also have street games here like "sipa", where your accuracy and ability to control improves.

Holding the breath while playing kabadi helps in improving the concentration. I used to play kabadi when I was a kid. Now I am out of practice. Holding one's breath is now said to be a form of exercise.

Hi Charmz, I can hold my breath for maximum 1 and half minute. But it completely depends on the time of the day also. If I am very much tired then it will surely vary. I really don't know how they hold their breath for 5 minutes or more! Definitely it should be a matter of long time practicing.

Yup, it all depends on how prepared and conditioned our bodies are. Warm up exercises should do it.

I can hold my breath for about a minute. I think its a matter of practice. There are those that can hold their breath for 2 minutes more depending on practice. I think the average person can hold his or here breath for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.

I could hold my breath under water for almost 2 minutes before I could go up to breath on a fresh air. Well, I watch his show is very unbelievable but he did it. And that is amazing. Such talents and abilities is very rare now days. Well, even in Guiness world of records or in Ripley you could find a list of extra ordinary men and women doing those stuffs. Well, they are really have the talents and skills without it they would hardly survives.

holding breath is a kind of art which will be developed based on continous . I can hold my breath up to 68sec. as i don't know swimming i did not test it under water. generally the holding of breath is gained ore importance while swimming as even if a person wants to get saved from the persons who are hunting he can get saved by drowning into water if he can hold bearth up to a longer extent by making more pactice...

i don't know precisly...let me see...about 1,30 minutes, but i don't know if it's a good time, i think that the time we can hold our breath depends on our polmonary capacity and our training. Someone who make some sport like running or swimming, can hold his breath much longer then us, for some minutes i think.

As a poll, most people can hold their breath for 1 to 2 minutes. I used to be able to hold nearly up to 2 minutes, about 2 years ago when I was free diving in a local diving club. But now its probably the usual 1 minute. I don't actually want to know how bad I'm at this anymore, I haven't been diving for a long time. Perhaps I can stay down longer, but then my recovery time is longer on the surface. People can't hold your breath for more than a few minutes, because when you stop breathing, you begin to store up a gas called carbon dioxide, which your body cells produce as a waste product. Keeping a longer time is an amazing thing, but remember to be careful.

I almost forgot that. Yup, if you alter the exchange of gases you will also increase the toxicity in your blood. Thanks for sharing a good information. Cheers!
