Hello, I have heard that American's are not allowed to visit Cuba. Is this true? Some friends and I had a heated debate recently and one friend insists that Americans can visit Cuba, but are not allowed to spend any money there (cannot encourage their economy). Who is right? Also, are there any airlines that fly to Cuba from the US? Thanks.

No. We are not "allowed" to visit Cuba. It's been that way since the Cuban missile crisis. The governments are discussing it more now and it may change. As an American, I've never understood why we can't go there. I heard it's absolutely beautiful! Certain business people can get a special visa to go to Cuba. There are a LOT of business that are lobbying the US government to be able to go just because they want to make money off the Cuban people. I think the fact that Raoul is not in charge might change some things. I live in Argentina where I have residency. I can go to Cuba with my Argentine documents and don't have to show my US passport. I've heard there are some Americans who have gone and the customs officials asked them if they wanted their passports stamped or not so there wouldn't be any evidence for US officials that the person had been to Cuba. In a nutshell, everyday citizens from the US cannot travel to Cuba but certain business people can. In answer to your question about airlines going to Cuba, I have no idea. For many years we could not even call to Cuba via telephone! That has changed but little else has.
