Its soo cold and dull in the winter as well as there is nothing much to do.It gets dark really early as well,so people tend to stay indoors to stay warm.Perhaps that is some of the reason as people do not get to see people who they normally would see. What do you think.

hi jugsjugs I live in California, the southern part and winter is still pretty mild and warm, not below 69 anyway and usually about 80 or so and sunny most of the time, some days the old June gloom happens in the fall too , but generally we have lots of sunshine and after awhile this can get boring. But I still prefer boring to freezing cold. I can understand in the colder states that people will stay inside more just to keep warm and thus are not as social as in other seasons. here the seasons all just sort of mooch together.

Well, I'm solar powered, so don't get much done in the winter, that's for sure. I think the bears have it right: hibernate for the duration.

I think that it is normal to feel a bit down at the holiday's, especially if you are not able to see relatives or friends because of the weather. Christmas is a holiday to be happy, thankful and joyful, and yet you can't completely be this way without everyone you wish to be around you, around you.

Hi Jugs...yes, I think for those of us in colder climates, the winters can seem confining and lacking in sunshine, and they tend to feel very long. It can be depressing, for all the reasons you stated. There is an actual form of depression, too, called SAD (seasonal affective disorder) where the blues hit some much harder. It's related to lack of proper light, and there are now special lights these people can sit in front of for a certain length of time each day that seem to help them. So...winter will be here soon. (sigh) But it helps to get out, even on a nasty day, and even if for a while. Karen

Personally, I find the winter strangely more relaxing than the summer. In the summer, because of the continuous hot weather, I feel bad for wasting each day just lazing about and not doing much. However, in winter, you aren't expected to venture outside, so I tend to take each day much more slowly and generally more chilled out. For me, I generally feel more awake during the winter months because I am less active and my energy isn't being sapped by the beating sun. I for one do notice certain people are less upbeat and less lively during the winter months because of the cold temperature and the bleak weather.

Hello jj. I don't know whether everyone will feel a bit down in winter. I guess that it might depend on his mood of the day. On cold winter days, I prefer to stay inside if I don't have to go out for work or such.

Hi jugsjugs, It is true in the beginning everybody will get down a bit because the change of climate is making the people down with cold, cough, fever etc. In our place the same situation is going on now and most of the hospitals are filled with patients. The dengue fever is in the peak and many are down this fever. Once the winter is set then I think everybody enjoys the cool climate and people are always feeling fresh. The day is shorter in winter season so people prefer to stay indoors mostly.

I really do believe that winter weather has some kind of effect on people. I woke up this morning and it's all grey and cloudy! I'm not exactly sulking but I prefer the warmth of the sun that much more. We have just put the clocks back an hour and I guess this means that winter has finally arrived. I like the great indoors when it's cold and wintry outside. There are so many things to enjoy within the home, a good movie, a good book, as many cups of your favourite tea that you like, it's good to do all this and slowly watch the winter months pass by! I guess it depends on the person. For me, I spend a lot of time online or a lot of time playing video games and don't go out that much anyway, so there really wouldn't be a reason for me to be down (except if I have to shovel the driveway...). For others, if they really enjoy going out and hanging out with their friends, then yeah, there's probably a higher probability that they will feel down (or at least very bored). But then again, with so many social sites out there and being able to connect with friends online, only those who are not familiar with technology would probably feel down.

Hey Jugs, no to be honest I find the winter more soothing. I think i prefer this time of year because I love the snow and I was never really a big summer person anyways. It's not like we do really have a summer here i live in Ireland and its always raining so it's a nice change to see it turn from rain to snow :). The only reason I don't like the winter is because people leave there pets out the back garden on damp rainy nights.

I believe so. Because it is cold everyone must likely to stay indoors and stay there always. When its cold weather here in my country especially during rainy days, you will not see a single person outside. They don't want to get wet and getting wet is irritable for them. They might stay in their house to keep dry. And its cold its so good to sleep.

I think that winter can bring some people down. There is a condition called “Seasonal affective disorder” which some call the winter blues. It affects people who normally feel fine during the warmer months but feel very depressed during the winter. I am prone to depression at any time and I know for me it is usually worse in the winter. Fortunately here in Western Australia it doesn’t get as cold as other places but it is still too cold for me! I hate feeling cold...

In winter, I feel a bit down in the cold ,raining days. But in a sunny day in winter, I can enjoy the sunshine's warm. And I can have some exercises, too.

No, I do not think everyone feels a bit down. I myself like the winter season the best. I like the snow and all the holidays cheers that we see during the winter. It is cold outside but you can always go inside to get warm and then go back outside for fresh air. The snow can make it difficult to drive on the roads but in the summer or spring someplace get hail or hurricane even tornados which makes it difficult to get around also. We just have to learn how to adjust to the weather and the fact that it gets dark earlier in the winter months.

..Hi jugsjugs, It has been reported that people tend to be a little depressed in the winter, because of the changes in time, and the early nightfall, in many areas. They do suggest that people increase their indoor lighting in the winter. The sunshine in other seasons does lift the spirit. I tend to hibernate in the winter, waiting for April,I am not a winter person, but I do find things to keep myself busy, so that I don't concentrate on the very gray days of winter. I wouldn't know how to live in Alaska with six months of darkness every year. Take care.
