It is often said that the subjects taught in schools are too academic in orientation and that is would be more useful for children to learn about proatical matters such as home managment, work and interpersonal skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

We may sometimes find that some subjects are not necessary because we don't see a need for immediate application in our daily lives. But in reality, they help us understand the world better and subconsiously, the underlying principles learned sink into our concious and subconsious minds and affects our mental development and thought processes. They are part of a wholistic education. There must be a good balance. So in a sense I disagree that education must only focus on the practical side. Except in vocational and technical courses that must have a definite focus that is to learn the trade and apply it straight away. cheers!

yeah,I gree with you,it's the duty of parents ,not teachers,to prepare their children to deal with the practical affairs of life, the home not the classroom. And the academic subjects have withstood the test of time, they represent the accumulated wisdom of our ancestors down through the ages.

lichee china I think that when its all over and done with and a person is actively pursuing his or her career then a person will begin to see how all the subjects that they learned do fit into the layers of your career and life. they all have their place so work with them and learn from them.If a person is sub intelligent fine, just learn practical skills but for the educated person all these many subjects will eventually come into play. You will then see why they were given to you.

What subjects are you talking about that aren't useful? And do you realize that sometimes the parents need to be responsible for what the children learn? A school is a place for students to learn academics that can't readily be taught at home in order to be able to perform complicated matters within a job - math, science, language arts, programming, etc. Simple matters that can be taught at home, work and home management should be done at home. And interpersonal skills are taught at school. Parents need to stop looking at schools to teach kids everything, you had the kid now step up.

i agree with the latter,we can learn no much than theory, lacking of too much practice,we should do more practice at school, and interpersonal skill, one of my classmates study din't well at school, but he's a boss now, what's more, another student who often get the frist praice at school is his staff now!
