How do you celebrate halloween?

In the Philippines, Halloween celebration is fast becoming a tradition. some schools are even conducting a halloween party first before going to a semestral break. Some shopping malls hold a halloween contest where there is a prize to be won for the best costume. Some villages organize a treat or trick for their little ones. What I got to see is that houses in these villages will start to decorate their houses with pumpkins, lanterns, masks just like what americans do during halloween. We are not into that yet. My family is not used to celebrating halloween. But since I already got a two-year old son, I might want him to experience what a halloween celebration. So on the 31st of October, we will be going to the mall, put him on a costume and join him in the parade of kids in costume.

I am so excited for you. I think that it is great that you are going to celebrate the holiday of Halloween with your family. It will be a great tradition for your two year old son. He may be the first one in your family not to remember life without Halloween. It is a very enjoyable holiday. People getting to play tricks on one another. They all dress up in costume and hope that others will not recognize who they are. It will be fun to go to the mall. I hope they will pass out candy. Don't forget to take an extra bag, just in case your son's bag get's too full of candy. It is the tendency of a lot of people to give more candy to the younger kids because they are just too cute. I hope you enjoy the holiday just as we do here in the States!

Hi aileen, I'm very pleased to say we don't celebrate halloween at all here as it is not a Greek tradition or custom. So no worrying about small children knocking on strangers doors and bothering people and no eggs thrown at the door.

I see. I am just curious why americans are very excited about the halloween when in fact in the Philippines we associate this to paranormal activities. But just for a change, we will celebrate this day just like what americans do and see if my kid will enjoy it the way the americans do.

Well for me i still love the traditional way of celebrating halloween. The one called "pangaluluwa". The present practice, the trick or treat, the costumes, these are not original Filipino. These are enfluences from the western countries. True, kids love wearing costumes and going to the malls for a trick or treat, but we have to make sure that they understand what they are doing and why they are doing such. This would give meaning to the halloween celebration.
