Do you use a "canned" home school curricula or make up your own?

We home schooled our children. I could never locate a "canned" or prepared curricula that I liked. It seemed the Christian based ones were to church oriented - when I teach spelling I don't want to teach religion. Others just didn't seem to have all the pieces. I was wondering if these curricula have improved any over the years. I also noted that just about the time our girls finished school they were coming out with home schooling via internet. It sounded promising. Making our own curricula was very hard and time consuming - I would always compare topics to what the public schools were teaching and I used a series of books called "What every ___ grader should know". These were helpful in making sure we were covering the topics we needed to. I don't regret it for a minute and neither do our kids. Since they are both in college now - one on a full ride scholarship - I guess we did okay. At least we didn't damage them :) So how are the curricula these days. My brother is younger and has little children and his wife is considering it.
