Teens: If your parents lose their jobs, what will you do?

Okay, so we all know the economy's pretty bad and a lot of ppl are losing their jobs. Both my parents are luckily still working, but since it's slow at my mom's job she only works every other week. So that got me thinking, what if one of my parents lost their job? What would I do? Well luckily I have gotten a job, I am 16 now, and I'm still in training, so I work only once a week, and I'll be a replacement whenever anyone gets sick. But if one of my parents lost their job I would definitely not let them go down like that. I would help them out by working hard on my part and getting any extra money in. I would probably have to ask to work everyday or switch to a higher paying job if I could find one. And I would probably give up things like less time on the computer, using up a lot less water and lights. It would be hard, I would pbbly have to quit all the things I do afterschool because my parents pay for these classes. It would be hard but I would be willing to sacrifice these things to help out. Would you?

What a sweetheart you are wigima. It is most unusual for someone of your young age to even consider the perils your parents may face in the near future. Yes, it would be difficult to give up all the things you are used to, but in times of adversity, a truly loving family pulls together. Why not try a few of your ideas now, like using less hot water and paying attention to the utility bills? It is a good time to learn about conserving BEFORE things get desperate. It is always a good time to save money, not just when faced with a job loss. Keep that positive attitude, young lady, it is truly admirable!

Oh thank you so much. :) And yes, I've been thinking about that. I probably should start conserving things more. It's just that when you do not feel pressured you are less likely to change your ways, but I will try. I've tried changing a few things like unplugging certain things at night because they still take up electricity even if they're off. (

You are definitely on the right track. Our environment needs all the helping hands it can get. Also, take good care of all the possessions you do have. School backpacks, books, CD's, clothing, etc., can all be recycled. They can be sold for a few extra dollars, or donated to someone less fortunate than yourself. Discuss it with some of your friends. See who can come up with the most unique and worthwhile ways to recycle and reuse things. Challenge them to a competition and have fun with it, while you are working to protect the environment, and lesson the burden on our landfills.

Yes, a lot of people though say that people who care about all this stuff are hippies who smoke and are crazy. So I am so happy that finally it's getting attention and fashionable to be green. Thx 4 d good ideas. :)

I admire you for being prepared to offer your support for your parents. There are few kids who will do that this time. They will even tend to blame their parents for losing their jobs. I experienced helping my parents cope with our financial crisis after I graduated highschool. Instead of enrolling for college I stopped for one year and helped them in taking care of my siblings for them to have more time to earn for a living. During weekends I sell fruits and vegetables in the market while my mom stayed home for my brothers and sisters. To continue with my studies, I applied as student assistant (working student), so I can start with my college studies. My parents paid for my boarding house rental and food, and I took care of maintaining my scholarship as a working student. After two years I made it to the dean’s list—full scholar. No need for me to work for the school. I continued to help my parents in selling crafts and other products from our area (with the faculty member and my classmates) so that I will have money for my projects and other school expenses. I graduate college with flying colors and my parents were so proud of me. I am also proud of my parents for giving me the opportunity to help them and supported me all the way. After graduation I took the board exams that my parents loaned from a relative just to let me go with the licensure board exams—I passed the board exams and landed a job (that we pay on a shared basis when i had my job). Now I am more capable of helping then and even now that I am married with kids, I still continue helping my parents in my own little ways.

Wow, that is such a Great story! =D I'm glad to hear of all you did for your family. It's inspirational. :D I admire that as well. And especially that you didn't just give up and say you couldn't do anything. You took it into your own hands, sacrificed a year of education, helped your family and still managed to get an education and a great job!

I think our way of life will have to change. You will not have as much income and money to just buy whatever you want. That could be less internet access, less satellite and cable packages. Also could mean doing alot more yard sales and garage sales. Also could be eating out alot less more.

We already barely eat out but yes I could definitely already think of a few things I could cut out. I spend too much I think on shopping for clothing because I Love fashion. And I feel guilty sometimes for that. So, I probably wouldnt have any new clothes for a while. It'd be hard. and especially losing the internet since I have so many friends on here, some of them best friends and I have so much fun on here.

Actually i would. You know why? The things i have now came from my parent's money, they're not entirely mine. I owe them these things. I certainly will minimize my demands for money and leisure because i know it will be a great help. I owe my parents my existence and at times of trouble they need me.

That's great! =D *high five* You are so right. I hate the kids who give huge attitude to their parents because those kids are usually the ones who demand the most from them. You need to be very thankful for all the stuff they do for you.

I'm not so much a teen anymore... but when I was younger, I worked as a student tutor and stopped going out as much for movies, dining, sports and such. Eventually we broke off from cable and downgraded our Internet...in the end, we actually started to depend on our local library and coffee shops for the free wi-fi. I'm not sure what I would do now... probably just go back to being a tutor. It paid pretty well.

we can see that you are caring children, the current world economic downturn, many people are unemployed, but people have not lost the instinct to survive, there are always ways to find ways to survive, as long as mutual understanding and support of family members, difficulties will get over, all of us all to work hard to find ways, life would be getting better and better, and must have confidence in.

Yes ..the economy now is pretty bad. But my parent's jobs are pretty secure. But let's just say they will loose their job.. I will try to get myself a job. And I would try to talk to them, and send them to the country side, so only me and my sister will live in town. My salary should be fine, for a boy and a girl in town. I am a student now, and I already have some offers for the feature.
