I have just moved into my new house and we have a wood burning fire. I have never had one before and we are struggling to build a good fire and most of all keeping it going. Does anyone have any tips for using wood burning fires? Any tried and tested methods ot tricks?

Hi carmelbg! The way my dad used to build a good and long lasting fire was to have some lightered or kindling, and some oak wood. Oak wood burns hot and burns for a good while. You may want to use some small pieces on the bottom and the larger pieces on top. He also burned some dogwood as it also burns slow. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for that! We will try building it a few different ways to see what works best. Its amazing really you would think something like building a fire would be easy, but I think there is a knack to it.
