Admittedly, it's been a long while sense I lived in a house with a garage, but garage doors recently came up in a discussion. I will ask you... Do you prefer the automatic garage door opener when you approach a house with a car? I prefer a automatic garage door opener when I approach a house. Why? Because I still say it is safer. You don't have to get out of your car until your garage door is closed. When the weather is rotten, less likely to get you cold or wet. The latter though is my primary reason for liking the auto door. If I could find one that was trouble free, all the better!

I have not lived in a house with a garage since 1973. My parents got to put their cars in the garage and we only closed them at night, or if we were going out of town. Since, by 1973, there were 4 of us driving in the house, there was no way to KNOW if we were home or not - of if my sister was at home (granted, she was only 15 when we moved out so not quite old enough to drive.) So, I pitied anyone messing with the garage just because they didn't see any cars, and that was a different time. Some times I wish we could go back to that time - WITH the computers and other conviences... I mean

That is another benefit of the garage door. No way to know who was there and who wasn't. I wish there was a gizmo that could tell your lights to tell lies too, like turn lights on randomly...

They do have some devices that turn on and off lights and now you can do them at several times on the same thing. My mom used to have one that she turned the lights on both in the morning and then in the evening. And this was before 1998 when she moved out

I have a garage but we do not have an automatic garage door opener. I would prefer a garage with an automatic door opener because then I would not have to get out and open the doors or stand in the rain and cold weather. Maybe someday we will be able to build a new garage and put on an automatic garage door opener.

A cheaper solution is perhaps to buy an umbrella until the economy clears, but then again, it does depend on where you are.

I like automatic garage doors especially during rainy seasons. One doesn't need to get himself wet while opening the doors. The problem with some automatic doors is that they are open to false signals since they are remotely activated. One of my friends automatic garage door is activated everytime there is a plane fying by. He had the dealer's technician fixed it and the problem keeps on coming back.

Now that would be a massive stink side to the automatic door, then again, like the poster above me, it could make life difficult for the bungler hoping to snitch your junk...
