Presciption or alternative medicine?

I was wondering should we always go for prescription medicines that your doctor provides or is it better sometimes to go for the alternative. I think for stress and depression sometimes things like reflexology and accupunture can work wonders. I don't think it is actually the treatment itself that helps, just the fact that you have taken time for yourself to unwind and relax. It has been proven that people that are less stressed do not get as ill so often. So maybe we should all take time to consider the alternatives. But on the same scale I do not think doctors prescriptions should be ignored but a good combination of the two can work wonders for a lot of people. What are your thoughts? Would you consider alternative medicine?

There's really nothing wrong with alternative medicine as long as it's proven effective and there's no side effects that are too harmful to the body. I guess it all depends on the situation. Doctor's prescription can give you the assurance that the medicine is safe and won't harm your body. I live in the province where alternative medicine is very common. However, there are instances that it makes the condition worse or has some side effects that are really harmful to the body.

But on the other side of it I know from experience that sometimes prescription medicines can have nasty side effects. I had swine flu a few months ago now and was prescripted tamiflu. The tamiflu made me feel a lot worse making feel very nauseous. A member on here has recommended a berry for swine flu, I can't rememeber which one, but if it helps then it can only be good and being a fruit it won't have any side effects.

If alternative medicines are proven to be effective in treating certain kinds of illnesses, I think we should go for it if we are open to the idea. Some of them have been used for centuries and are proven effective.

Thanks for the response. I think alternative medicine definately has a place in the world, but I don't think badly of all prescription medicine either.

I'm a firm believer in alternative & all natural medicines. Most prescriptions have too many side effects for my liking. I've NOT found that with the alternative brands!!! Yes, there is a time & place for prescriptions, but I must be on my deathbed before I willingly take them!!! I suffered from depression a good number of years back. The prescription meds made me crazy. I switched to Saint John's Wort & got better. Things like reflexology are a tremendous help...much for the reason you stated. If we take time to make our body happy, our body will take time to make us happy!!!

I try both chiropractor and RX, I never like to totally close anything that might be helpful.
