When he was alive at a time, he made waves and got known throughout the world especially with two most memorable records tittled WE HAVE THE WORLD AND BEAT IT, but at a point he lived a low profile immediately after his death people were saying he was most popular man on earth, Is the true.......................

His popularity in the mainstream media did rock back and forth, but I don't think it really had any impact on the importance of his music, or its popularity. He went through a lot of stuff in the eyes of the public, and this made him become quite reclusive. He will always be popular in my eyes!
