Swine Flu has nothing to do with swine?

I heard a farmer talking on the news today and apparently he has been told that research shows that Swine Flu has nothing to do with swine and the media needs to stop reporting it that way and this has done a great disservice to the industry. Swine sales have went from 70$/lb (per 100) and now down to 30$/lb (per 100) and young farmers looking to continue to family name cannot make a living with these prices. Another problem is the threatening rate at which factory farms are growing which is squeezing the life out of ordinary farmers and I know because every time I visit my hometown another housing development is built over the farms I knew as a kid. Could factory farms the culprit for this swine flu? I heard at the beginning of this epidemic that swine flu could contain virus of human and bird flu--so are these farms just injecting these poor animals with too many vaccines?? If anyone knows anything about factory farms one knows that they are far from a clean sight. Here's a thought--if we want to address the climate changes lets take a look at the impact of factory farms right under our noses. ---------------------------------------- "Factory Farming website" http://www.cwac.net/factory_farms/

I heard early on that influenza strains are named after animals to make talking about them easier. Avian flu came after the alphabet had been run through and "A" occurred again, like how we name hurricanes. But I've also read that they are named after animals because those animals are the ones that are susceptible to that particular strain. You can't get the pig flu from eating pork, at least they say you can't. I'm at the point where I don't trust anything they say.

canadian pork farmers are really suffering due to the thought of the swine flu. many asian countries that used to buy pork from these canadian farmers are no longer doing so. its too bad that they are jumping to conclusions like that.

Hi Revella, I've heard so many conflicting reports on this, that it's hard to know what the true origins are. Not much of an opinion or very helpful, but at least it's honest lol Karen
