Well it just happened to me .I had just come home from shopping when decided that I was going outside to do something .I had taken my keys out of my pocket and left them on my table and then went outside .Now my door has a latch that shuts it when its slams and 'lo and behold' after being outside for a few minutes I heard the door slam shut. Now this is something i had always feared and whenever I am leaving my house I check my pocket oevr and over for the keys however I guess that this is just one of those days that I didnt preempt anything happening and was just off my gaurd.Luckily for me I had left a window open and managed to use my upper body strength (I have been kind of doing some exercises )and crawl through the window.I was really praying that no one saw me and mistakenly call the cops on me lol.Ironically I just saw the cops drive past. Now has this happened to anyone and what did you do ?

Getting locked out of my house is a familiar happening in my life. So I keep a spare key outside in my garden somewhere in some secret (hopefully) spot. I used to keep it inside an empty clay urn, but then I saw it had vanished and this really gave me the jitters. Someone else now had the key to my home! For a long time, I used another lock on the front door, but now I've reverted to using my old key. I don't know how wise this is. Now I hide the key in another place outside, hoping no one finds it. Luckily, my terrace door can be accessed via my neighbour's terrace. That's if I've left my terrace door ajar. Sooner or later I will have to change the door locking system. So find the best place for your spare key. Maybe leave it with a trusted neighbour, or in a potted plant with lots of leaves.

Actually my mother locked herself out of the house. I was a kid and had gone to play with my friends. In the meantime my mother was talking outside the house with a neighbour and the door slammed shut behind her. When I returned she was sitting in front of the main door. It was not easy for us to get inside. I called the father of a friend who broke open the back door and then we got in the house. It was a tensed and weird experience.

The door of my house is locked by key, so I never get locked outside. It was the aim of my partner since the construction of our house. I didn't pay attention on it, but your situation tells me that it's a good idea. But in the other case, I could call for a technician to fix or even replace the lock.

Actually it had happen to me sometimes, when I forgot to bring with me the keys when I'm going out! It really annoying when you locked yourself out your house because you need to dismantle one of your window just to get in or just break in into your own house! Good thing I'm always leaving spare keys outside my door! Just like a hidden duplicate key, so that if I forget my key I can use it, and never be locked out of my own house!

Isn't that just the pits. I'm glad u were able to get in. Alot of people leave a key hidden outside but i never felt comfotable doing that. I did that one time years ago & i hope it taught me a lesson. I think i went to a neighbors & called my oldest to come get me in the darn house.

Good morning Ronnyb, I don't know if u have a neighbor u trust but i do & one that trusts me. we have a key to each other's house & we know where we keep the keys so if that happens we can go in & get our key. i'm home most of the time & knock on wood i haven't had to do that but know i can if need be. She works but her husband is disabled & he is always having to come over here & get their key.I'm just not much on leaving a key outside. Take care & keep that key in your pocket.

I was close to getting locked out once. I generally have a key in my computer bag, but I use the Garage to enter the house. One of the dogs ran out of the front door just as I was leaving to pick up a friend, and I had to chase her down. I had locked the front door due to leaving habit, and when I came back it was locked. I tried the garage door combination and it would not open. I sat there for a few minutes angry at the dog for escaping and myself for locking the door, before realizing that I still had my cell in my pocket from contacting Mother a few minutes before leaving. I called her and explained my situation, and she told me that the garage combination had been changed. She gave me the new one and I was able to get back in. Relief!

Am trying not to laugh but this is a visual and sounds funny. Just glad you got into the house without the cops stopping you. Would be hard to prove you are the homeowner if your information was in the house also. I've never been locked out of our house. We've lived here 35 years. I won't lock my front door if I am walking to the garage or out to get the mail.

This happened to me a few years ago when I was still living in an apartment. The apartment only had one door to get in which is the front door, and we had a small space there where we had stashed the washing machine. I was working nights then and would do my laundry when I would come home so that my clothes would get dry in the sun. My brother who shares the same apartment would leave in the morning since he held a regular day job. I think its out of habit that he would lock the door as he went out. But common sense would dictate that he would have seen me three feet away from the iron gate doing laundry and assume that I don't have the keys with me. When I finished my laundry and was so tired and wanted to sleep, guess what? I couldn't get in because the door was locked. I had nothing on me outside, even my cellphone. I had to ask a neighbor to break down the door in order for me to get in. It was a good thing it was my night off work that time so even if I was not able to sleep right away, I was still able to rest. And I asked my brother to pay for the repairs of the door because it was his fault that I had to ask someone to break the door in, and waiting for him to come home from work after ten hours is ridiculous.

This scenario that you have described cause to smile a little. Incidents like these happen but when they are taking place you are upset and sometimes angry. later when we view the circumstances we laught at our folly or our lack of tolerance or impatience as the case may be. Ronnyb, I like this incident as a discussion point. Let me relate mine although it is somewhat different. I am the last person to reach home most night because of the nature of my job. Most times my husband is asleep but when I come I know he would awake. I should point out that I do not carry around keys with me because I am prone to lose them so I try to concentrate on my car keys only. During my ordeal I had mixed emotions. I felt sad, I felt as though he did not care for me; I even said suppose someone was about to attack , the worst would happen and he is asleep. It so happpens that on that particular night I knock until I was "blue" and there was no response. At this point I sat outside and decided to sleep outside but this idea was changed. Intead, I hunked my car horn very loudly and my husband woke and opened the door. Instantaneously I was relived to enjoy the safety of our own home again. He apologised and said he was very tired.

Actually, this has happened to me two times already. It is really such a hassle if this happens. The first time around, I was in such a panic. So I called my dad. He broke the doorknob and the lock. The second time, I just attempted to crawl inside the window. It is a good thing the window is big enough that I can squeeze myself into it. Although it was very hard to do so. Now after those two times, I made 2 copies of my house key. I put one in my car and the other in my everyday bag.

Ronny... you should always stash a spare key somewhere. Even if it is on the opposite side of the drive way in some metal case disguised to look like a rock or anything somewhere. You dont have to be as conventional as under the floor mat but be creative and no one will find it. I let my mother borrow my SUV and forgot that I didnt have the garage door opener or my keys. When I got home with her car I had groceries and my 2yr old, and luckily we hide a spare key or I would have been in a mess of trouble. And probably not able to crawl through a window ;). So maybe make a trip to home depot or lowes, or even meijer or somewhere and get one made. Good Luck glad you were able to get in.

Definatly has happened to me. It was not my fault though, my roommate had left the key in the door on the otherside and because of that my key would not work. It was either paying a locksmith a ton of money to get us in the home...and simply breaking open a window. So we broke the window and just had to bear the cold night and get another window the next day.

That is a horrible feeling ugh? Instead of locking myself out of the house I have a several occasions locked myself out of my car and I can see the keys in the ignition. Now that makes you feel helpless and stupid. Might me a good idea to hide a spare key in a magnetic container on your car, like I should do also..smile.

A few times - I now keep a key or two stashed around the farm for just such events. The time i didnt when i was in this house I had to stack a pail and an old stool ontop of the doghouse, use a hammer to pry open a window that was partly open then remove the hinges (ironically i had a hammer and screw drivers in my car) then make the window open farther...then pop out the screen and wiggle through the window. PRAYING i hadnt left anything hard on the bed below the window and drop down to the bed. After that i had to put the window back together and THEN could get on with the rest of my day. I started hiding keys soon after that AND making sure the hammers were tucked away so someone else didnt decide to break in via hammer like that!

When I first started living on my own, I left my apartment (and the key inside) to talk quickly with a neighbor, but unthinkingly pushed the knob lock thing as I stepped out. I had to bother a few people to finally get myself back inside my apartment. That was really embarrassing.

Yes, not to long ago our screen door latch lock on us. It was not completing shoved up and after the third slam it lock. My husband broke the window on the screen door and unlatched it. All the windows were locked so that was the only way we could get in. There is no key for the latch on the screen door. I have not replaced the latch yet but I alway check to make sure the latch is shoved all the way up.

No, I have never been locked out of the house because there are so many of us, there is always someone inside. But my brother did manage to lock himself out of his car while it was running. He was about to enter the garage and so he went out to open the gate manually. He forgot that the door was malfunctioning and automatically locked when it closed. So there was the car, facing the gate, the engines running without anyone inside. When he sheepishly told me what happened, all I could do was look at him and roll my eyes. Boys...
