Do you type LOL when you really do not laugh out loud?

Because I've seen many who just type LOL for fun when actually they do not even smile

Of course. Typing "LOL" reflects how you feel about a certain phrase, topic or conversation. Some people may not be smiling but they probably feel like laughing out loud. 
Take me for an example, I don't literally LOL here at the office but that's how I feel about certain conversations or phrases from my friends.
