Well, I think that it is incorrect to say that only people with a lot of friends would get a lot of responses. Yes, the friends contributes but that is not the only factor.
I have started several discussions where only a few of my friends have responded to but I got a lot of responses. I like to think I get lots of responses because my discussion is very interesting, lol 
In my opinion, I believe that having friends will help, but you also need something interesting to say so that everyone can respond. So when you get a big discussion you can have a lot of friends . . .
In short, I disagree with you when you say that if you don't have any friends then nobody will participate in your discussions.

If you have several friends on your list they might respond on your discussions if they can relate to the topic, if you respond on their discussions and if you comment back to their responses.
Usually having friends means they help each other just like friends would offline. That is not always the case though

Yes, this is true because friends will always start conversations with each other on discussions. . . and they will and they will seek out all your discussions . . . and respond to them.

I don't think that it is necessarily true that the more friends the more responses, as ones that aren't friends with the discussion starter can still respond. It really all depends on if the discussion is interesting enough to respond to, then and only then will people respond, whether they are friends or not. I know I only respond to discussion that interst me, and it isn't necessariy a friend that started the disucssion either. Of course, having frends does help, but it sure isn't all that necessary. I have respnded to friends and non friends discussions, and they have responded to mine, when I started them that is. Good luck to you and happy mylotting.

Hello, jemaries! Not necessarily a person who has not too many friends will have not too many responses for their discussions. As long as you create interesting and good quality discussions, people will respond it, be they're your friends or not. Having friends is a very good thing because besides discussing, this site is also about socialising.
