SO-- I normally don't listen to it. BUT, I have recently found a band that I can NOT take out of my CD player. The instruments are played SO beautifully. The people in the band are straight hippies that have SO much talent. The singers voice is amazing and peaceful. The band I'm talking about is "Other Lives". Has anyone heard of them? One of my fave songs is "Black Tables". It has a wonderful piano piece that starts off the song. I play the piano, So I appreciate it being incorporated into new music! Do you listen to any kind of folk music, and if so, who do you listen to? (BTW-- take a listen, they're on myspace)

I guess it would depend on what your definition of "folk" music...I listen to Ani DiFranco, Cat Stevens and the like which to ME could be classified as Folk Music but others may not see them as such ya know..

I've always enjoyed folk music.Joan Baez was a superb folk singer. I've got some of her early albums and still enjoy listening to them.I also love the Houghton Weavers (a Lancashire folk group) the Spinners, June Tabor and Maddy Prior.Last year, I heard a singer called Roy Clinging. He is from Cheshire(my county) and I bought one of his CD's Cheshire Born, which is a collection of traditional songs from Cheshire and I listen to that a lot.

Oh, Great!! I've heard of Joan Baez before! I'm very excited about how many folk singers/groups you've named, I will have to look all of these up to listen to. I've really grown fond of the music. It's just natural raw music and talent. Thank you so much!

I listen to folk music. I love Joni Mitchell. I have finally, after years of collecting and searching through the record bins at Half-Priced Books, bought all of her original records. I also like Don Mclean, and I'm pretty partial to Bob Dylan.

Half-priced Books... I haven't heard of that. But, wow, original records for Joni Mitchell! That's pretty special! I usually order movies, books, and music from half.com. But they don't have records :(

I love folkloric songs, specially bangla folks... Bangladesh, or in general 'the Bengal' (Bangladesh along with Bangla speaking state 'west bengal' of India), has a very rich musical heritage and culture dominated by its traditional folk music... guess, you are not aware, bangla folk songs generally are very rich in spirituality... you might have heard about sufi or baul songs... some of them are full of real life humours... in general, bangla folk songs are very simple in structures and words and thus, very easily touch the heart of people... i get astonished, they deliver moral and realistic teachings in so simple words!!! bangla folk songs have many forms (sub-genres) like baul, bhatiali, bhawaiyah, jari, shaari, pala, kirtan, gombhira and many more... i am touched by each of those... and mostly, i get lost listening...

Folk music can be very interesting. Not only with the many instruments used in the songs, but also because of the words. Sometimes you have to think about what the words in a song means... it's pretty much up to interpretation, but I like to get the artists spin on the song.

Folk songs are melodius and will contain a message. They are performed with traditional musical instruments, the charm of folk music is not yet faded, as it is liked by even modern youths.

Here in my country there are a lot of people who listen to folk music. Actually we call it "turbo folk" music. As musician, I have to listen and follow all genres of music, but I'm not fan in any way of this type of music and I don't judge people who listen to it. The only one type of folk music I like is country music. I've never heard about this band before, but now I can say they are not bad :). It's sooo diferent and better type of music than "turbo folk".

wow! never heard of "turbo folk"! I'm glad that you liked it! I just have such a passion for that band now that.. I dunno, I guess when a band isn't "mainstream" yet... you consider them "yours".. Like your own little band that now many people have discovered yet. Well, I will say that they have a following, but they still just tour small bars and stuff like that. :)

My 15 year old brother LOVES folk music - his favorite singers are Simon & Garfunkel and John Denver. I myself enjoy several of John Denver's songs, my favorite being "Annie's Song".
