Where were your kids last night at midnight?

Last night we went out for dinner and to the casino. We came home and I got on my friend Michael's radio show. He plays a lot of what my father-in-law called loud, rotten music, not really my type of music, but I like the company. Anyway, it was just after midnight and he was playing the last song of the evening from some metal band that I had never heard of, when boom, the power goes out. So after we look around, we realize that our house is the only house that doesn't have power and Richard goes outside to check out the switch box. Well surprise, one switch is flipped one direction and all the other switches are flipped the other way. He comes in the house and says, "get your cell phone and be prepared to call 911 in case this turns out to be a home invasion." So I stood there, phone in hand as we went back out to turn on the power. Well, that was it. The power went back on. Nobody was around. Probably just some high school kids playing a prank. Scared us half to death though. Where were your kids last night?

I know it wasn't mine...they would have cut it off at the pole by remote device....or by a highly trained squad of covert op squirrels. WEll, at midnight my youngest daughter was upstairs in her room studying for a class and yackin on her cell phone, winding down from a busy night at work. The others, who the heck knows, they all live out of state on their own now.

not everything is caused by squirrels x. i fear your squirrel related paranoia is getting out of control.

Firstly, I'm thankful it wasn't a home invasion and you didn't have that problem to contend with - rather scary though. Secondly, we live too far away, with an ocean between and no private jet, so it wasn't any of us - and if my kids could get there I'd be jealous, because I can't - and if I did, I'd be standing there saying "Boo! Guess who!" Our metre boxes are outside (have to be). If there is a problem, the electricity supplier will supply a key so they can get to read it and we can have access to the fuses etc.

Well we don't have any kids... but I know if that happened I would be quite freaked out, and would most likely run from our house to my MIL's house, promptly knocking on her windows and the backdoor to get inside quickly! We live out in the country and know our neighbors though.

I just thought about something though, if it's around midnight then we wouldn't be able to tell if it was just us or not without calling his MIL because her lights would surely be off by then, and our closest neighbor doesn't live there but up the road now.

Our next door neighbor's lights were out too, but his street number sign was lighted. That's what gave us the clue that it was just us!

That is really scary. Our switches are either inside the main part of the house or there are a few in the cellar. There is an outside entrance to the cellar that we don't keep locked, but you have to get past our doggies to get to it, so we are not worried about that. I would definitely not want our switches to be outside where somebody could turn them off, even if it was only a prank. By the way, both of my kids were home sleeping last night, although admittedly not in the same house.

Put a lock on that power box! It could have very well been a prowler or it may have just tripped on its own, but why be sorry when you can be safer? We owned a rental condo with the power box outside. Our first move was to put a lock on the box. We noticed we had the only box without a lock. Keep the key in a drawer in your kitchen and have extras made for your keychains. That way you're never looking for the key if a circuit trips itself. Happy to hear you are okay!

Mysticmaggie, that is a really good suggestion about putting a lock on the box and having several keys for it that are in convenient locations. It is entirely possible that the circuit was overloaded and tripped itself, but as you stated why take that chance. I know that our circuits have been tripped every once in a while, but it doesn't happen often, so we are not sure exactly what caused it.

That's scary. I'm glad you all were still up and that nobody stole anything or tried to hurt anyone in the house. I hope it was just a kid playing a joke but still that's scary. My child was in the bed asleep at midnight but he's little still so I don't have to worry about anything like that with him yet. lol

Sometimes if the circuit gets overloaded...like several things turned on practically at once, it will cut out automatically. My Dad's used to do it...it was quite annoying as it happened in the area where I was. The lights, my computer and the fridges would go off and I would have no light to see what was going on. It's weird really that it only happens some of the time.

When I'm going to be coming home at night I try to remember to leave a light on. Though who would want to break into my home I don't know...it really doesn't happen where I live. When I'm away overnight, I leave the radio on for Banjo and the other animals who sleep under the house. Times like these I wish I had a man around the place. *shudders*

We've had that happen before (long ago and not in this house), but in this case hardly anything was running, so I seriously doubt it was an appliance. Plus the gate and the breaker box door were both open.

I don't have any kids, and I have an Alibi! I'm aware some elecric companies have meters and such that are accessible by them from outside the house, but I'm surprised to hear that the panel could be got at by somebody outside your family or the supply company..You would think it should be securely locked! So say if you had an alarm system, somebody could simply kill the power outside before making an entry and disable the system?! Here in the UK,My 1970's vintage house has the meter box inside the house..as there's nothing to access outside,it takes a power cut or a problem with an appliance that'd trip a circuit breaker, but there's a lighting and an appliance circuit,so rarely they'd both go out..There may have been build code changes since my place was built,as I've seen external meter panels on some new build houses, but have never been close enough to check one out..afaik,they need a key of some sort to get access..So the switch that was thrown wasn't an RCD type (Automatic) trip switch? Is your house more accessible than your neighbours? could it have been some neighbourhood vigilante music critic?
• Omagh, Northern Ireland

Your relative isolation would seem to rule out the neighbourhood roving vigilante music critic taking some action on the late night Metal airplay...Is the switchbox easily accessible by a stranger on your property? Is it in an obvious position? How much light is out there that might help someone see what they were doing? could someone have found it and tampered with it without bringing along a flashlight,or would they have needed to have come prepared? Was it raining that there might have been tracks or evidence of "visitors"? I would not like the idea of someone playing ninja in my back yard at night while I was home!

Well all the houses are the same, so if they're familiar with our model they could find it pretty quickly. It wasn't lit though, they probably had a flashlight.

My house is the least accessible in the neighborhood because we have a really long, steep driveway, so it's definitely funny that they climbed all the way up there just to annoy us.

My little one was fast asleep in my bed actually! (Long story…) I have heard of nasties switching your power off outside and wait until you come out, hit you on the head and rob you. Once when my husband was away my lights went out and I ventured outside, flicked the switch back on and returned inside without giving it a second thought until he gave me a long lecture when he returned about how dangerous it can be to do that; I’ve been instructed to ring my next door neighbour if it happens again when I’m alone.

All my kids where tucked up in their beds sleeping soundly. As was I and my hubby. That must have been scary it would have freaked me out, we have our box inside. If the electricity company want to get to it, they ring in advance and book an appointment. Don't understand why everyone doesn't have it indoors.

Well, I'm pretty sure it wasn't mine. She was at a friends house last nite but they'd have had to do some serious travelling to find their way to your place. Not saying that it couldn't have happened but I'm not going to question her on it without further evidence. Well, I'm glad you both are alive and well. Must of been a bit intense there for a few minutes, huh?

oh my only kid a nd hes fifty just left here awhile ago, but I am sure he was not going around pulling the switches. could it be a power surge made a circuit breaker go off. I had the darnedest thing in the apartment we were ousted from. if you used the toaster at the same time as you turned on the microwave oven, kerplooey, the circuit breaker went off. seems our refrigerator and toaster and microwave oven were all on the same circuit. and I had to hunt through fourteen to find the one that went off as they were not labeled at all. grrr. hope it was not kids, but who knows? glad it was not a home invasion.
