A few months ago I was in Germany and I ordered a nice cup of hot choco, guess what the price was? 3 euros! So I asked the waiter why they charged a price that exorbitant. He said that there's service costs included. So I asked, what those service costs are. He replied: that's the TIP you have to pay. I said, what? I don't have to pay you anything except for the hot choco, I was absolutely stupefied but I accepted the price, with bad grace...
Tell me about your experience and your country's general policy in the food industry!

waiter is serving you coz it is his job
you are visiting a restro coz ur happy
you give tip coz you were happy n ur waiter served u well
this helps in developing oneself from inside
even if you will not give tip and your order was worth rS 500 then it will look awkward as you can give 500rS for eating and not 5-10 rS to person who is serving you
it is an tradition that has been coming long backfrom emperors age

It's not very common in my country, the Netherlands to force someone to pay for a tip, the customer could even call the police if that happens here. I do know that it would be appreciated to pay TIPS in Germany, but 3 euros for a cup of hot choco? Come on...

Here in the U.S. it's common to tip a waiter or waitress For meals and occasionally for drinks. The usual tip is 15% of the meal. In the up graded restaurants the servers are often paid less than the minimum wage. If they are good they can make a good living from their tips. There are a few restaurants that add the tips in to the final bill. I wouldn't give a very big tip for just a cup of hot cocoa because they really aren't going to be coming back unless it to refill the hot cocoa and charge for each cup.
I also give a tip to the person that cuts my hair if I get the cut I want because the cost is small at a franchised hair salon and they aren't paid very much either.
