The lamest/worst excuse to use to get out of coming to work?

I just thought about this while taking a little break at work today. It was supposed to be my day off but I got called in because the other girl called in sick. I got to thinking because she looked fine the day before and because she was talking about some event she wanted to go to with her friends but couldn't because she had to work that day. So, I started thinking about whether or not she was actually sick or pretending. Then I got to thinking about all these other lame excuses I've heard people use throughout the years to get out of coming to work. I think the worst one was when this girl called in and said that she couldn't make it because she was still out of town. The funny thing was that I actually saw her an hour before that walking around in the store. Another one was when a coworker called in because she sprained her pinkie finger. We later found out later that she was lying and that she wanted to go out partying with friends. And finally, a girl called in and said that her grandmother passed away. A few days later, the same grandmother, showed up at the store.

A couple of years ago, I told my boss that I couldn't come to work because I was having family trouble. I said that I was having issues with my wife, so I don't know if I was going to make it to work that day or the following day. I called him from my celphone. When I called, I was sitting in a plane, in a runway in Milwaukee, stranded because there was heavy traffic in the Chicago Airport. I was just coming back from a job interview. Now that I think about it, it was really lame.

Hmm...that one is not too bad. Hopefully your boss didn't start asking you how things were going with the family when you got back to work.

instead of wife problems... you could have just said you were stuck on a plane. lol... either way, you couldn't do too much about not making it in. lol

That's true. It's not like you had control of situation. I've actually used a similar excuse before. I was stuck in a different town because the highway was closed due to sever weather conditions.

I can't think of many lame excuses but I really was sick yesterday so I had to take a sick leave. Oh well, the stomach aches really do work, but getting gasritis really sucks.

Ouch, I have to agree with you there. It's all good and fun to try and come up with weird excuses but the actual thing does suck. I hope you're feeling better.

I've heard a lot of lame excuses myself here at work. It ranges from a migraine to being hospitalized but miraculously be better the next day... But the funny thing is our boss keeps on believing these excuses from my co-workers.

I also find this funny. I've heard so many out there excuses and it's usually by the same people but my boss also believes them too. You would think that they would be a bit more suspicious after a while. Maybe they just don't care or something. Thanks for responding.
