supplements cause liver problems fact or myth?

i heard from my co nurse that drinking supplements can or may damage our liver. i think this is partly true since medications are being processed in the liver. over use liver may cause malfunctioning. but how come doctors still prescribe medications when in fact they knew that this is bad.
