Veterans Day

United States
November 11, 2009 8:39pm CST
Hello all. It's called Veterans Day here in the US, and it is when we remember and honor all of the service men and women who've fought for or died for to help keep us free and protected. Soldiers are special people. Do you do anything in particular to honor them? I say prayers, light a candle, and often, a poem for my myspace blog. If you live elsewhere than the US, do you have such a day to honor your military people? Karen

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, So nice of you for encouraging Military services. But, you have another feather at your country, where Military service is cumpulsory for every citizen. Out of teh way, did you ever serve and for how many years.Off course, my hubby served, but he made me also to be part of transit with Army convoy once. It was very much strange and exciting experience with both my sons along with us, travelling all the way in terrin and odds. May God bless You and have a great time.

I live in the US just like you do. So we call it Veteran's Day. I don't really do anything special for Veteran's Day but I do thank the past and present military people that I know for all they do.

Hello there. I also think on the good these people do, especially my dad, who is now passed away, and was a soldier in WWII. It must take so much love and courage. Karen

Karen- My husband had to work last night so we took him out to lunch at Applebees who was honoring Vets/Active Duty with a free meal. It was really neat to see Veterans old and young with their families. Namaste-Anora

Hello Hatley. I have great respect for these people...and I see them as deserving and courageous. So many suffer now with service related physical or emotional problems or trying to get proper care and benefits. I am sorry for your handicap, but do empathise, for that is why I no longer go to the parades, but honor our veterans in other ways :) Have a nice night. Karen

Oh Jo, it surely does break our hearts...so needless, so horrid. These brave men and women deserve all the honor we give them, and that was such a senseless act of cruelty. Karen

Hi Karen, We don't exactly have a day when we remember the soldiers but on our Republic day (26th Jan)they are honored by the president for their heroics. I think I may sound grumbling but i think that it is good that we haven't earmarked an entire day for celebrations, otherwise we would have one more public holiday. India, just pounces on whatever they can lay their hands on, to grab a holiday. Its a wonderful thing that you do my freind, to light a candle remembering them. Bodhi

Hi Bodhisatya ... Your Republic day sounds something like our Veteran's day. LOL, I'll have to agree that for almost every day on the calendar, there is some celebration or another going on here in the US, some more obscure, some national and widely embraced. I do think some are more special than others :)) Karen

Apart from Veterans Day, in Turkey, veterans are honored on most of the national days. Usually they watch the ceromonies with high level protocol as a sign of respect. We also honor our Martyr's Day. Honoring the ones that give their lives for the nation and country. I just hope, they're not forgotten in rest of the days and they can live in better conditions with their earnings from being a veteran.

Hi Smedtra. Respect for those who actively defend a country's people is good :) I am glad you have this for your veterans. It seems on a grand scale, too. I also agree that here, too, veterans do need to be remembered often and provided for, often more than they actually are. Thank you for telling us about it. I enjoy learning about the customs of other countries. Karen
