Nowadays, people from developed countries tend to become skeptic towards alternative meds or quack doctors,in which some poor countries still believe in. At times when there is no possible cure for a certain illness, people tries these kind of medications just to have a little hope for their sicked loved ones. Can you be one of those when it is really needed and no one can cure a certain illness? why or why not?

In this advance medical world it is pathetic to note that many fall victims to quacks!!! I do opt for alternate medicines, like homeopathy or natural herbs, but not the bush doctors/quacks.

like homeopathy or natural herbs yea same here...along with aromatherapy, crystal therapy and light therapy...it all depends on the ailment as to which I would use....Of course I do still take meds and see my doc etc since some things IMO CAN'T be dealt with alternatively in my experience..

There was one time that I had this cough and headache that I couldn't take out of my system, that's I why I resorted to taking alternative medicines or herbal medicines. As far as I am aware of, more and more medical professional have turned to alternative medicines to provide cure for patients. When I took the herbal medicine, I felt better. About quack doctors, I resorted to one before. My arm was broken because of a skating accident, and my grandmother panicked because I have a dislocated arm. They were about to take me to a hospital, but they did not have any money, so they took me to a quack doctor and the quack doctor tried to fix my arm and he put some medicinal leaves in it, and told me that it would help with the swelling. And after one week, my arm swelled big time. It weighed one kilo, and I was afraid.. But it was all temporary though. My arm healed, but the dislocated arm, remained dislocated.

oh no! that experience with a quack doctor did not ended with a happy one.hahaha. just kidding! :) seriously, that is the main reason why some other people still believes in quacks, because of their financial capacity to pay for a real doctor. i hope your dislocated arm will go back to its original place.:)

maybe you never did experience nor encountered some people who went to this quacks. because here in our country, which is a poor one, people in the province tend to believe to those kinds of "healers". this is not only because they would like to,but because they lack the resources to seek for a medical assistance from a real doctor. that's why there is the word "still" in my question. anyway, thank you for responding.

I was born and raised in HK. When I was younger, I remember how people used to criticize Chinese Herbal Remedies and call them baseless or just "fiction". These days, I see more people getting into it and I think more people are interested in alternative cures. I think I would be interested in getting such kind of alternative treatment, if I were to be put in a circumstance where I believe it would serve useful.

Guess what, I do believe in quack doctors but I'll use the word as monks. I'm sure really sacred monks have the ability heal people who are haunted from ghosts which I really do believe in. I dont' know about other countries but I'm sure in Thailand there are many quack doctors and some methods really work.

that's why i'm talking about...even if they're not the we-all-know-type of quack drs.,some have their own healers in which they believe in.even if they are not the usual health care provider that we are all used to,they are the ones who has the ability and faith to heal,it may not be the physical illness but also the spiritual or psychological ones. thank you for responding.

its like this it is your faith that cures you. Theres no harm in trying. I am from a province wherein quack doctors and alternative medicines are still being practised. Despite of modern technologies in medicine that are being developed.I still believe on it.

I think that alternative medicine can help. I am more skeptical about medicine which provides family doctors, because they is very load with work, so they have no time and patience to particularize in every individual case. And to get more money they have collaboration with some pharmacy companies, so they write out recipes for medicaments which is not always the best for specific illness. Almost a year I have strange feeling and pain. Once per two month I go to my family doctor with one and the same complains and symptom and every time she diagnose me different illness. Any of remedies which she had give to me not worked for a long time. So for that reason I tend to believe more alternative medicine than traditional.

though I often use western medicines, i also believe in alternative way of healing. and since I was a kid until now, with my niece and nephew visit "quack doctors" for simple or ordinary illness. if we are not healed, then we go to the doctor. nothing's wrong in believing in them, after all we get healed.

I can't blame people in the developed countries for being skeptics since with the advancement of their technology they have a way of verifying the benefits of let's say a plant in detail. Whereas, in the developing countries, people used experience as their basis whether a plant has medicinal use in the absence of a scientific way to prove it. However, there are cases when even scientists and doctors can't come up with an explanation and they do admit that there are things that science has no explanation to it which just proves that it has it limitations. I have a friend who met an accident, he was run over by a van. He and his family were advised by the doctor that he would last only for weeks but it turned out otherwise, he fully recuperated and you can't even see any signs about what happened except the stitches. Even his doctor was amazed.

quack doc?...oohh!! i won't risk my health with that kind of doctors, i think socio-cultural and psychological are the reason why some minorities avail this unlicense doctors, but for alternative medicines, it self, is acceptable for simple illness..

As one of the medical practitioner, i don't believe on such things like that. I'm more on Science. Yes, your right some poor countries and old minds, still want to believe on that. That's why there are some programs that has been implemented to those who are believing on that thing, and we should respect them. Help them for better cure, for the improvement of their health.

Let's not confuse quacks with real alternative medicine ( plants, traditional chinese and hindu, reiki, etc). I am grateful to be a healthy person but in case of a need (hope not) I would rather not underestimate the alternative medicine.

for me id rather to go to the medical doctor, other people find a way in order to get better thats why they go to quack doctor. and the other reason why is they dont have money plus there culture and belief.

jerenah2022, First of all, I think there is a huge difference between alternative medicines and quack doctors. The latter being a questionable and ill qualified individual to treat any sick patient is just illegal and unthinkable. Though the human gullibility may be culpable but medical health authorities are equally to be blamed for their existence. The lack of proper education to create a public awareness to bring them out of their misconceptions and strict enforcements to prevent such questionable practitioners from plying their trade. As for alternative medicines, it is really genuine and has its foundation for known treatments and cures. The only thing is that it needs to be administered by qualified specialists in this field for complicated conditions. Otherwise, most of these ingredients are quite harmless and could be administered moderately according to medical journals and recommendations. Also, that the herbs be bought at licensed medicine shops. So for me, it will be no no for quack doctors and a yes for alternative medicines.
