Lamb's advice has helped so many Lotters on here and his patience, with some of them who tried hard to understand everything and get things right, is never-ending. I add my thanks to him with yours, not only for the help with banners but with everything else too! 
May I add something else? If you want your banner to appear at the top, just go to 'edit profile' and drag the box up.
Check the comments on your profile every now and then too. You can delete them if you feel they are inappropriate. I removed my comment box completely to stop spammers leaving their links
